society. The advance of society will surely influencethe development or change of language. Even some sociologists think that linguisticstructure and linguistic behavior can find some possibilities to be determined by socialstructure. Additionally, in the pragmatic literature, culture comprising a series of normsand values is a prime social-world correlate to the choices of language (Verschueren,2000: 92). As one of notions which are most likely to be misunderstood, culture is anexample in respect to which social interaction is interpreted pre-theoretically. In this sense, Verschueren points out those cultural dimensions involve a variety of contrastsbetween literate and oral societies, rural and urban patterns of life or the mainstream andthe sub-cultural environment (Verschueren, 2000: 92). Besides, linguistic choices arealso made based on other social dimensions of variability including social class, race, linguistic group, ethnicity, religion, and profession, level of education, age, kinship, sexual pReference and gender and so on. Since news leads are edited for the readers toread, it is a must to take such aspects of readers into consideration. It is also because ofthis reason that a couple of lead examples will be cited in the next part to see how thereporters make different choices to adapt to certain social context.

2. Adaptation to Mental World
There is no doubt that verbal interaction is communication from mind to mind, though the “mind” here mainly refers to “the minds in society”. In the light of AdaptationTheory, Verschueren points out that such aspects of one’s mental world are involved ashis personality, desires or wishes, beliefs, intentions and emotions, the adaptability ofwhich may be stronger or weaker in different situations. Moreover, such aspects ofmental world get triggered by the utterer and the interpreter during their respectiveresponse to the others’ message. Just as the utterance needs to interadapt with theutterer’s mental world, the choices made are always adapted, whether tentatively orsuccessfully, to the utterer’s assessment of what the mental world of the interpreter(s)looks like (Verschueren, 2000: 89). In simple words, choice-making concerning the mindworld is of the same equivalence for both the utterer and the interpreter. However, thisis not confined to the verbal discourse; it is the same true of the textual discourse. Ofcourse, the news discourse is included. In the next part, several examples of news leadswill be analyzed in terms of both the reporter and the readers’ mental worlds. First isfrom the point of view of the reporter and then that of the readers.

Chapter III Adaptation to Linguistic Context in News Leads

Discourse itself can function as a dimension to which linguistic choices arecontextually attached, exemplified by referring back to former discourse, by beingself-referential, or by projecting towa论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
