Chapter 1 Literature Review

This  chapter  will  review  the  previous  studies  related  to  our  research.  Firstly,  the definition and historical development of CDA and DHA will be introduced. Secondly, previous  studies  on  corpus-based  CDA  and  DHA  are  to  be  presented.  And  finally,  a review of “Chinese dream” and “Made-in-China” will be provided. 

1.1 Previous Studies of CDA and DHA 
Before  the  emergence  of  CDA,  not  many  researchers  paid  attention  to  the relationship between discourse, social power and ideology. CDA regards language use as a form of social practice and takes the context of language use into consideration, and thus  it  reveals  the  relationship  between  discourse,  power  and  ideology  as  well  as  the inequality in society (Fairclough & Wodak, 1997: 258).  Van Dijk (1987) deals with discourses on racism, Tamil panic, squatters and finds that newspapers located in different ideology provide different descriptions of the same event.  Fairclough  (1989)  is  concerned  with  connections  between  language  use  and unequal  relations  of  power  in  modern  Britain  and  tries  to  unravel  the  significance  of language in domination of people through discourses of Thatcherism. Compared with a body  of  fruitful  research  conducted  by  foreign  scholars,  CDA  in  China  is  a  new  area developed  since  mid-1990s.  Xin  (2000)  gives  a  brief  introduction  to  the  general methodology  of  critical  analysis  of  English  news.  In  his  opinion,  linguists  should reconsider social functions of language and adopt a critical approach to the analysis of news discourses.

1.2 Previous Studies of Corpus-based CDA and DHA 
Corpus-based  CDA  and  DHA  can  not  only  exploit  the  advantages  of  empirical study’s nature to the full but also reveal the unexpected hidden meaning of discourses. Stubbs  (1996)  believes  that  corpus-based  research  breaks  down  the  limitations  of discourse analysis, i.e. its small size and strong subjectivity, and thus it has become the new trend in the field of discourse analysis.   During the last two decades, more and more scholars have applied corpus linguistic to CDA. A body of research aim to discover the implied meaning of discourses mainly through  corpus-based  techniques  such  as  word  frequency,  concordances,  keywords, collocations and word clusters.
