sp;tokens are employed to annotate. This thesis endeavors to set up semantic disambiguation models of must, extract rules from the model of the training set to tell four senses of must apart and test them in the model of the testing set. Relevant knowledge on the relationship between modal sense of English modal verb must and time, aspect and voice and their restriction on semantic meaning of modal verb must is aimed at. Which linguistic feature influences four senses of must more and how do semantic features work with the features of time, aspect and voice will be clear. Finally, it is hoped to provide evidence and valuable basis for the study of modal semantics and the study of NLP.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Studies on modality
Modality is regarded by Saeed (2009) as a collective name of devices used by addressor for the purpose of conveying sense of commitment, belief or statement. It is mainly denoted by verbal morphology like subjunctive mood, modal auxiliary verbs and lexical expression such as verb and adverb. Papafragou (1998) holds that there are two kinds of modal meanings, including epistemic modal meaning and root modality. The later is comprised of deontic modal meanings and dynamic modality, because they are agent-oriented. She analyzes the pragmatics of both root modality and epistemic modality, advances that epistemic modality exemplifies embedded representation and argues for an approach to simply differentiate root meaning from epistemic meaning. Sweetser (2002) thinks that root modal meanings accurately reach to the epistemic meaning because people usually use language of the external world to speak for the internal world. Tregidgo (1982) believes a contrast between root sense and epistemic sense can similarly be reflected in two meanings of a verb such as insist and suggest. Even in verb agree senses of something needed to be done with agreement and something that should be considered true are not without exception. Halliday (2000) divides modal functions into ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function and defines two kinds of modal: modalization and modulation. His modalization consists of four kinds of probability and four kinds of frequency. Analogously, modulation has two parts: obligation and inclination. It demonstrates that he treats epistemic modal as modalization and takes deontic modal for modulation. Palmer (2007) develops a typological study of modality under the framework of cross language. He proposes that modality can be classified as propositional modality and event modality. The former can be subdivided into epist
