Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Time and space are human’s sensory experience. The cognitive linguists agreethat the spatial relations among material entities are the fundamental concepts. “Justas Chafe puts, the way language is used suggests that consciousness is unable tofunction without an orientation in space and time, as well as a social orientation and abackground awareness of some ongoing activity” (Wei, 2011). Space-time exists andstatic and dynamic material entities also exist in human’s consciousness, and they arereflected in languages. Therefore, the language expressions are divided into the staticand the dynamic ones (Chen, 2006, p.111). Linguists have made great efforts toexplore how language structures space. Thus, Halliday (2000, p.151) claims that asense of the semantic space can be gotten, which is construed by the circumstantialelements combined with various types of processes. In Halliday’s view, the construalof space can be formalized as the combination of the following functions: participant+process + circumstance. Talmy (2000a, p.177) considers that linguistic schematizationplays a fundamental role in the linguistic space description. That means only a part ofthe spatial scene is actually referred to by linguistic elements with closed-classelements, for instance, prepositions, and the structure of sentences, while the otheraspects of the spatial scene are disregarded. Hence, the spatial disposition of a focalobject in a scene is largely characterized in terms of another object. The abovestatements show that language can convey the spatial information effectively byproviding rich lexicogrammatical resources.

1.2 Aims and Significance
Fictive motion is pervasive in language representation. Fan (2014) claims thathuman beings can perceive and depict dynamically the static objective world in termsof fictive motion. As is stated above, the
thesis intends to explore how fictive motionevents are represented in the fictive motion clauses, to put it another way, toinvestigate how the static spatial relationship among stuffs is construed into clauses. To this end, on the one hand, the systemic functional grammar should be posited hereas the grammar of transitivity serves as construing human experience and representingit into the clauses by lexicogrammar; on the other hand, for a closer look at therepresentation of the fictive motion in language, especially the verbs, thelexicalization patterns and the dichotomy typology should be given a consideration. So the framework related to Talmy’s motion event should be adopted.Although this type of language phenomenon is pervasive in many languages, thepresent puzzle is that this type of linguistic instances take a relatively large portion inwhich register. The typical register has to be selected for data collection. The previousresearchers quite agree that the linguistic instances of fictive motion largely appear inthe novels and travel
essays as location and motion play important roles in thedevelopment of the events, plots and descriptions. Therefore, the major source of thedata come from the novels and the travel
essays as well.

Chapter Two Literature Review
Fictive motion event is a key issue in spatial semantics. Many scholars havespared no efforts to investigate this language phenomenon. In this chapter, theprevious studies on fictive motion will be rev
