2. Literature Review
In this part, at first, the basic theories of this study are given; then, the definition,measurement and related factors of TOA are presented; finally, the previous related studies athome and abroad are reviewed.
2.1 Definition of Tolerance of Ambiguity
Tolerance of ambiguity, sometimes also called ambiguity tolerance, refers to the way thata single person or a group of people how to perceive or process the vague circumstanceswhen they face a series of unfamiliar, complex or conflict cues (Furnham, 1994;Furnham &Ribchester, 1995). The related studies of TOA abroad started about twenties century. Thisitem was firstly proposed by the American psychologist Frenkel-Brunswick in 1949, whodefined TOA as a way of process on the vague information when the circumstances that arecomplex or differ from the learners' cognitive levels. This definition of Frenkel-Brunswick(1949) has something relevant and similar to Furman's (1994). Mac Lain (1993) indicatedtolerance of ambiguity as a gradual continuum and a process from refusal to acceptancewhich shows the individual attitude differences on the incomplete information. Norton (1975)interpreted the tolerance of ambiguity as a tendency to explain information signature by thesignificance that is incomplete, fragmented, multiple, structural, probable, inconsistent orunclear as an actual or potential source of psychological threat.All of the definitions make a conclusion that tolerance of ambiguity is a kind ofcognitive trend when learners with different levels of TOA face the variable vague situations.All this definitions are based on the aspects of acceptance of new subjects, the ability to adaptto the changes and the spirit of taking risk and creativity.

2.2 Theoretical Basis of this Thesis
The study expects to know whether TOA level of the students in the critical period ishigher or not, so this study is based on the Critical Period Hypothesis Theory. But as is knownto many scholars, Critical Period Hypothesis (hereinafter referred to as CPH) is just ahypothesis which is contradicted among scholars. In this part, a detailed explanation about theCritical Period Hypothesis is given.The Critical Period was a term in the field of neurology, and then was introduced to thefield of language acquisition which has a great influence when it comes to the age factor inlanguage learning. As Liu Zhenqian (2003) puts it, different scholars have several kinds ofexplanations when discussing the function of critical period in language acquisition.From the point of view of experts in neurology and psychiatrics, the brain willexperience differentiation with age (Brown. H. D, 2001).
