摘要:The overall purpose of this study is to explore the impact of TOA on the students’reading strategies, from the perspective of the division of arts and science fields.
1. Introduction
1.1. Background of the present study
One main purpose of English teaching is to develop students’ reading skill,conversation skill, and writing skill. As we all know, English reading is one of the importantways to acquire information and all kinds of knowledge of English, and it is also the basis ofEnglish conversation skill and writing ability. The selection and use of reading strategies hasgreat impact on the students’ reading achievement. Better use of reading strategies canimprove students’ reading ability effectively. In English language teaching and students’reading process, there are many factors affecting strategy selection and use. What is more, inthe English reading process, students often encounter unfamiliar or complex languagephenomena, which can cause different attitude response, and the students have to cope withthe difficulties that varying from one to another. Some of the students can keep calm, butsome of them will feel anxious when they face the unknown or unfamiliar words or sentencesduring the reading process. In the field of foreign language learning, this phenomenon iscalled “tolerance of ambiguity” (TOA), which is put forward by American psychologistFrenkel-Brunswik in 1948. People with high TOA are more receptive of new knowledge ofchange and uncertainty and not so anxious, but people with low TOA regard ambiguousphenomena as threat and often feel so anxious that they often fail to solve the target problems.One of the researchers Krashen believes that the emotional factors are very important in thelanguage learning process (2000). The positive emotional factors will coordinate, and developthe cognitive activity; while the negative emotional factors will destroy or prevent thecognitive activity. Therefore, the role of emotion can be facilitative or debilitative. TOA is akind of emotional factors that influence the students’ English reading process andachievement.

1.2. Purpose and significance of the present study
The overall purpose of this study is to explore the impact of TOA on the students’reading strategies, from the perspective of the division of arts and science fields. Throughreviews on theory and practice, this paper attends to guide the students to fully understandtheir TOA levels in their English reading, and accordingly adjust and select the appropriatereading strategies. Therefore, both the science and the arts students can get a better readingeffect and an ideal reading speed, which can enhance the students’ self-confidence when theyface the ambiguity situations. On this basis, the students can develop good reading habit,which is one of the basic requirements to promote the advancement of their reading efficiency,and train their better self-learning attitudes.Reading is one of the ways for the high school students to exposure to foreign language,and to participate in the foreign language practice. Thus, to improve reading ability is animportant way to cultivate language communication ability. As in resent years, the difficultyand the amount of English test in the entrance of examination are increasing. The limitationof thinking ability has increasingly become a major obstacle to students’ improvement in theirEnglish reading comprehension ability.
