Introduction
A. Nicholas Jose’s life and works
Nicholas Jose is a contemporary Australian writer. He was born in London and graduatedfrom University of Oxford and Australian National University. He acted as a culturalcounselor in embassy of China in 1987-1999 and now is a professor in University of Adelaide. He is an envoy of cultural communication of Sino-foreign, and many of his novels are aboutChina or Chinese, such as Avenue of Eternal Peace (1989), The Rose Crossing (1994), TheRed Thread (2000) and Original Face (2005). His works have appeared in Far EasternEconomic Review, Times literary Supplement, The Australia’s Review of Books, LondonReview of Books, Asian Literature Review and so on.Since the 1960s, Australian government abolished its White Australian Policy graduallyand practiced the policy of multiculturalism. Influenced by this trend, Australian literaturecircle raised a wave of fictionalizing Asia. Some Australian writers exploit the Asian themepositively and absorb the useful material from the Asian culture and thought. As an importantcountry of Asia, China’s image appeared many times in various Australian writings andbecame an important part of Australian literature. “What one should be aware of is thatalthough most of the Chinese images in Australian literature are passive and negative, as thedevelopment of international communication and tourism ...they made a change when theytalk about China.”[1]Nicholas Jose belongs to the style of Chinese theme and shows this kindof change. His interest in China is mostly due to his mastering of Chinese and the closerelationship between his ancestors and China. His great-grandfather has ever come to China todo missionary work. They stayed in Jiangsu and Zhejiang area for 10 years. And Jose’sgrandfather was born in China and spent his childhood in southern China. All of these have astrong influence on Jose’s creation.

Nicholas Jose and his works have received much attention from abroad and home, andthe research for him and his works are as follows.Firstly as for the research for the novel Avenue of Eternal Peace, the overseas scholarsplace their emphasis on the features of work. Carolyn Wakeman gave a high appraise to thisnovel in Los Angeles Times in 1991. He not only acclaimed the unique charm of thismysterious eastern nation, but also affirmed Jose’s contribution in promoting thecommunication between China and Australia. Brian Keenan published a paper named“Review:An updated novel for updated China”. This paper shows the creation backgroundwhen Jose wrote this novel, and explores the rapidly developing present and the constantlypowerful future of China. He gave a description of Wally’s situation like this: “Westernmethods (and lifestyle, perhaps) have disappointed him, his personal life is more or less nonexistence, he’s in a spiritual funk.... He’s the man trying to make sense of his life and theworld around him.... He’s a man on a quest.”[2]And the quest is a new cultural identity, a thirdspace through hybridity. And he pointed that “the practice of medicine comes to serve as ametaphor for cross-cultural communication.”[3]Domestic scholars such as Prof. Ma Lilipublished her work Confrontation and Reconciliation: Representing Chinese Women inAustralian Literature, and in this work she analyzed the characters of Avenue of EternalPeace and probed Jose’s China complex.
