The post-World War I generation was also collectively called “The Lost Generation”, and the term in this paper refers to the whole generation.
They were a generation devoid of faith and alienated from a civilization that was traditionally American. They found the old America was gone, and they saw instead a lonely, dehumanized, mechanized world, in which they felt, more strongly than ever, that they were no longer bound to each other by traditional standards of conduct or by the structure of their society. They had a sense of floating in a void as fragments of a society that had been blown into bits and pieces and was no longer whole. Theirs is a sense of loneliness, alienation, and fragmentation. (Ding Yongshu, 195)
The Chinese youth are considered as “The Lost Generation” because their behavior is similar to that of “The Lost Generation” in America. Although this title has not been permitted by the authority yet, no one can deny the existence of this phenomenon in the real life. These perverse things done by the Chinese youth just reflect their dissatisfactions with the society and the unhappiness in their hearts. Their present situation is far from their satisfactions, and both society and individuals should make efforts to change the situation.
I. The Comparison Between “The Lost Generation” in America and Today’s Chinese Youth
What I said in the above content shows that the Chinese youth are similar to “The Lost Generation” in America. Now, I would like to make a comparison between these two generations.
A. The Comparison of Their Epoch Background
1. The Epoch Background of “The Lost Generation” in America
The World War I took place in 1914, and America also joined the war. Many young Americans joined the war because they were told by the government that the war was just. They saw the cruelness of the war, both their bodies and hearts were hurt, and they knew that they were cheated.
Great changes took place in the decade following the war. During this era, the American economy experienced spectacular growth and the whole society turned into a greedily consuming society. However, the war changed the outlook of all Americans in very significant ways and intensified their pessimism and disenchantment with what was peculiarly American. Economically, the emphasis on mass production and Giant Corporation widened the gulf between the workers and their employers. Many people became disillusioned with the nation’s political life, and disgusted at the vigorous materialism of post-war prosperity, and the new frivolous, greedy, heedless way of life in the early 1920’s. (Ding Yongshu, 194)
They could not find a suitable position for themselves. They attempted to pursue a meaningful life, but did not know how to make it. So, they did a set of perverse things to express their dissatisfactions and hopelessness.
2. The Epoch Background of Today’s Chinese Youth
China has been developing steadily in all aspects in the past years. Now, it is more prosperous and powerful, and the Chinese people are leading a better life. The economy is developing smoothly, even faster than many developed countries people are becoming richer and richer; the politics is stable; the military strength is also at the leading position in the world and the country is in peace. Generally speaking, the situation is good. However, China is still a socialist developing country and there are some unavoidable problems. For example, the democratic system is no
