A Thematic Interpretation of Carol Ann Duffy’ Poetry

1.0 Introduction
Carol Ann Duffy is one of the most significant poets in modern British poetry. She is one of Britain’s most famous and most respected poets. Her work is read and enjoyed equally by critics, scholar and normal readers, and is both literary and accessible. She is looked on as one of Britain’s most well-loved and successful poets of the time.
Carol Ann Duffy is a Scottish poet playwright and freelance writer born in Glasgow, Scotland. She works as a Professor of Contemporary Poetry at the Manchester Metropolitan University, and she was appointed Britain’s poet laureate in May 2009. She is the first woman, the first Scot, and also the first openly homosexual person to hold the position, as well as the first laureate to be chosen in the 21st century.
 Carol Ann Duffy was born to Frank Duffy and May Black in Glasgow and she was the eldest child in the family. She read a lot when she was very young, and she always wanted to be a writer. Duffy writes poems from the age of 11. When one of her English teachers died, she wrote: “You sat on your desk,/ swinging your legs, reading a poem by Yeats/ to the bored girls, except my heart stumbled and blushed/ as it fell in love with the words and I saw the tree/ in the scratched old desk under my hands, heard the bird in the oak outside scribble itself on the air.” She has a gift for poems, when Duffy was 15, her some poems was published to Outposts, a publisher of pamphlets.
The collections of Carol Ann Duffy include Standing Female Nude (1985), which was a winner of a Scottish Arts Council Award; Selling Manhattan (1987), which won a Somerset Maugham Award; Mean Time (1993), which won the Whitbread Poetry Award; and Rapture (2005), which was a winner of the T. S. Eliot Prize. Her poems discuss issues such as oppression, gender, and violence, in a language that everybody can easily understand, which has made them popular in schools.
 
2.0 Writing of Carol Ann Duffy
 Carol Ann duffy writes poems in everyday, simple, conversational language, making her poems accessible by both academics and normal people. Dramatic monologue, the contemporary versions of traditional poetic forms, which is created by Carol Ann Duffy. Duffy frequently uses dramatic monologue to explore different voices and different identities, and she also likes to use the sonnet form. Duffy is both serious and humorous, often writing in a mischievous, playful style. Duffy is a good user of language, she can construct relation between meaning and reality well through language.
 Carol Ann Duffy’s work is about both everyday experience and the rich fantasy life of herself and others. From her childhood, adolescence, and adult life, Duffy can find happiness through love, memory, and language. Charlotte Mendelson writes in The Observer:
 “Part of Duffy’s talent - besides her ear for ordinary eloquence, her gorgeous, powerful, throwaway lines, her subtlety - is her ventriloquism. Like the best of her novelist peers, she slides in and out of her characters’ lives on a stream of possessions, aspirations, idioms and turns of phrase.
