This chapter gives an account of CDA.Firstly,it summarizes what CDA is accompanying some definitions of the authoritative scholars in this field.Then,it introduces the aims of CDA,which should be helpful for our better understanding.The third part is the theoretical foundation of CDA,a succinct introduction of its theoretical background.The fourth part is the methodology,because Van Dijk’s Sociocognitive Approach(SA)is adopted as the analytical tool,it gives an elaborate introduction of SA in this part.
1.1 Definitions of CDA
Critical discourse analysis proposes the critical analysis of discourse,especially the public discourse in order to enhance people’s language awareness,improve their connoisseurship and critical ability in language use.It pursues“by studying the minute details of linguistic structure in the light of the social and historical situation of the text,to display to consciousness the patterns of belief and value which are encoded in the language-and which are below the threshold of notice of anyone who accepts the discourse as‘natural’”(李蜜,2006:20).For Ruth Wodak,“‘critical’means not taking things for granted,opening up completely,challenging reductionism,dogmatism and dichotomies, being self-reflective in my research，and through these processes,making opaque structures of power relations and ideologies manifest.‘Critical’,thus,does not imply the common sense meaning of‘being negative’-rather‘skeptical’.Proposing alternatives is also part of being‘critical’”.(Kendall,2007) “The manifold roots of CDA lie in Rhetoric, Text Linguistics,Anthropology,Philosophy,Socio-Psychology, Cognitive Science, Literary Studies and Sociolinguistics as well as in Applied Linguistics and Pragmatics.” (Wodak R＆Meyer M,2009:1)CDA considers“language as social practice”(Wodak R＆ Meyer M,2009:5),“It tries to marry a method of linguistic text analysis with a social theory of the functioning of language in political and ideological processes.”(Fairclough,1992)
Consequently,CDA has no interest in analyzing a linguistic unit but“in studying social
phenomena which are necessarily complex and thus require a multi-disciplinary and
multi-methodical approach.”(Wodak R＆Meyer M,2009:2)
In summary,CDA focuses on the analysis of the concrete discourses,reveals the implied relation of power and discloses the unequal phenomena existed in society.Coming immediately after,we’ll see the aims of CDA.
1.2 Aims of CDA
“CDA aims to disentangle the giant milling of discourse,to chart what is said and can be said in a given society at a given time with regard to its qualitative spectrum(what is said?How is it said?),and to uncover the techniques through which discursive limits are extended or narrowed down…CDA aims to question and criticize discourses.”(Wodak R＆Meyer M,2009:36)CDA carries out its aims through two aspects.Firstly,CDA displays the inconsistencies existing in discourses themselves and between them,the restrictions of what can be said and what can be done,and the ways in which certain utterances that are just acceptable in a particular period and place sound reasonable and unquestioned.
