关键词:the Feminist Consciousness爱玛女性意识英美文学Jane Austen

摘要:The novel by Jane Austen is characterized by the unique feminine and keen realistic insight. Different from the men realistic novelists, she writes from a keen feminine visual angle. Feminist consciousness focuses on the women characters' inner lives during their self- development written by women writers.

ther-in-law is the only one, but they live far away from Hartfield, just come bake to meet the people in Hartfield once or twice a year, even when Emma’s sister and brother-in-law come back, any of Mr. Knightley’s faults can not missed from Emma’s eyes, no matter how respectful he treats Emma, Emma can not disregard his defect. So, Emma’s brother-in-law dear not to oppress her a little bit, moreover, he has to be judged by his sister-in-law.

Emma, this character reflecting a kind of spirit which casted from the oppress of patriarchy and reflecting her free consciousness. This kind of free consciousness is so strong, it repels any factors which may prevent the growing of free consciousness----such as mother, who represents the same sex’s guidance. Feminists always emphasis that females themselves are the “victim” of patriarchy, at the same time, they are also the “accomplice” of patriarchy, they----especially mothers, usually preach their daughters, actually, they are the accomplice of patriarchy. Emma’s mother died when she was very young, Emma’s sister, Isabella is not as smart as her, “Emma is the cleverest in her family, when Emma was ten years old could answer questions her seventeen-year-old sister, Isabella, could not.” She is keen and confident, but Isabella is blunt and diffident. At this situation, Isabella can not give Emma any influence or guidance, in other words, Emma is a wild flower grows freely in prairie.

This kind of free consciousness also reflects in her financial independence. Different from other heroines of Jane Austen, Emma is rich, her family is a descendant of an old aristocratic, financial resources is abundant, and respected by the people in Highbury, as a inheritor of 30,000 pounds Emma need not to worry about her future, just as she said to Harriet: “Don’t worry, Harriet, I will not be an old poor woman. To the magnanimous public, they will look down upon the single who is poor, absolutely, a poor single woman is ridiculous, but a rich single woman is honorable, intelligent and popular, never be inferior then anybody.” Although Emma speaks insolently, but some is really true, women’s passive financial status absolutely throw shadow to their personality, a woman does not rely on man in economy, who can enjoy freedom much wilder and purer.

    3.1.2 The Consciousness of Right

In Jane Austen's age, it was universally accepted that right is based on rationality. As women are supposed to be only emotional creatures, the notion that women have right or power is naturally rejected. An author for the Edinburgh Review dismissed the proposition that men and women would ever be equal “in power and influence upon the affairs of the world” and even warned that if women are "made ostensibly powerful...the spirit of chivalry...will speedily cease". This claim partly justifies what Simone de Beauvoir has said: men tend to positive masculine identity through a negative feminine image. Thus, women's lack of right rightly reflects the powerfulness of men as well as their superiority.

In consequence, it is understandable that few women have right because social ideology requires relinquishment of female right of any form. But Jane Austen is daring in her attempt to subvert the traditional idea by creating a heroine with the power of right in Emma.
