1.1 Research Background

Compared with other subjects, English learning in senior high school accounts for a large proportion of students’ learning in senior high school, which is of great significance to students. Meanwhile, in the process of English learning in senior high school, reading has been regarded as one of the most important parts of English, which is one of the main ways for students to acquire knowledge and learn English. In senior high school, better reading ability of students can not only promote their listening, speaking, and writing progress, but also enable them to achieve more ideal results in the College Entrance Examination. The importance of reading is obvious in senior high school English learning. According to The English Curriculum Standards for High School (2020) (hereafter, the New Curriculum Standards), senior high schools should meet the needs of students’ personality development. Although some teachers try to use strategies to promote the development of all students, nowadays, many senior high schools in China still follow the traditional teaching model, especially in areas with less developed education, where teachers use unified material and standards to teach and evaluate different students. Designed classroom activities and arranging after-school reading assignments can only meet the needs of some students. Under the current education system, students’ uneven English levels are often overlooked.  

In addition, English reading occupies an important position in the process of English learning and teaching. Due to the lack of an authentic environment for English acquisition in our country, reading is still one of the main ways for learners to receive foreign language input. The lack of natural language input makes reading an important role in the English learning of most Chinese English learners. At the same time, reading classes take up a large proportion of English teaching. Moreover, the New Curriculum Standards also points out the cultivation of students’ linguistic competence. In view of the important role of reading in English learning and teaching, teachers also pay great attention to English reading. 

1.2 Research Significance and Purposes

The significance of stratified teaching mainly includes the following two aspects. Firstly, it is the theoretical significance. The study of stratified teaching in senior high school English reading classes is helpful to promote the better application of stratified teaching theory to practice and continuously optimize the theory. It can also provide empirical support for the theory of stratified teaching. Secondly, its practical significance lies in the study of stratified teaching in senior high school English reading can provide relevant researchers and teachers with new ideas. In addition, it can promote the development of most of the students during the teaching practice. Last but not least, with the implementation of the new College Entrance Examination policy in Sichuan Province, great changes have taken place in the examination methods of English subject.
