摘要:收敛理论的写作有很大的益处。是否正确使用衔接手段在写作是提高写作能力的关键。在本文中,衔接理论的框架下,韩礼德的衔接手段,分析非英语专业学生英语写作和使用。

purpose of this thesis is to arouse the students' interests in English andunderstand the concept of cohesion. Then through the research, I attempted to find somestrategies, which can be paid more attention by teachers in English teaching. The use ofcohesion devices can help the students have a better organization of the whole passage andeffectively form the relationship among sentences. Training the students to strengthen theawareness of cohesion and coherence will be helpful for the students to do more exercises andimprove the writing quality.Third, it is a way of cultivating the students’ ability of mastering a kind of language. Forexample, to know how to organize the text is helpful for the students to understand the text.Through the study, the final purpose, I will answer the three questions:1.How frequently are cohesive devices used in two groups?2.What is the relationship of the numbers of cohesive ties and the writing quality?3.What are the causes of making errors and strategies for correcting errors?The significance is that cohesive devices are clues for the readers to know the wholepassage. Train the students to find out the relationship and the logical connection of structures.Some key words or sentences indicate the relation of context. Some details and facts interpretthe authors’ intention and understanding is then achieved. Through the analysis, the studentscan find the important errors and the importance of cohesion. That will give teachers andstudents some implications. The result reveals the difficulties of students and they can paymore attention to cohesive application in the future.


1.3 Organization of the Thesis论文的结构

Chapter One gives an introduction to the research projectand the intention of understanding the cohesive features and functions of writing from theperspective of coherence. It states the detail of the research background, argues its purposeand significance of the research. It also states the study’s central objective and theorganization of the thesis. So Chapter One makes it clear that the focus of this study ofcohesive devices is to apply cohesion into English writing.Chapter Two is a historical review of cohesion theory applied to English writing.Literature review introduces some basic concepts about cohesion, such as the relation ofcohesion & coherence, followed by the classification of cohesive devices. Then it argues theforeign and Chinese scholars’ contributions to cohesion theory. In this part, it mainly mentionsHalliday’s cohesion in systemic-functional grammar and Cohesion In English (1976)published by Halliday & Hasan as well as relevant researches of some Chinese scholars suchas Hu Zhuanglin (1994,2001), Huang Guowen (1988), Zhang Delu (2001,2003) and Hoey(2000). It states the relative researches aboard and at home.Chapter Three states the methodology. It explains and justifies the research method,including research question, participants, data collection and analytical procedure. Datacollected comes from the sophomores’ compositions. Five qualified teachers take part in theresearch and judge the quality of the writings and give reasonable scores. Finally, it tells thewhole process of the research.Chapter Four argues the frequency of cohesive devices in the samples, then compares thefeatures of the compositions in Group One and Two.
