1.2.1 Constructivism
Constructivism originated from Piaget's developmental psychologytheory. Piaget (1977) states that students should be active constructors ofknowledge and information rather than passive receivers. According toconstructivism, knowledge is not constructed by the individual in thephysical environment he is in, but promoted by social communication andcooperation. Every student has his own knowledge and experience, sothey can accomplish a certain task and solve problems by mutualinteraction and communication. This social interaction can create alearning community for knowledge construction, thus providing abundantresources and positive support for both teachers and students.


Chapter Two: Investigation into the Current Situation of Writing in Senior EFL Classroom


To get a clear idea of the current situation of writing in senior EFL(English as a foreign language) classroom, the author conducted aninvestigation in a senior high school and therefore put forward thenecessity of the application of cooperative learning in English writing.The details of the investigation are listed as follows.


2.1 Purpose
The purpose of the investigation is to get a thorough understandingof students' attitude to writing (including interest and motivation), thedisadvantages of the existing writing model in current Senior EFLclassroom and students' opinions on their teachers' feedback or correctionabout their writing. Then it will be necessary for the author to analyze thereasons and make it clear that putting cooperative learning into thewriting process is a feasible idea most English teachers should adopt.


2.2 Participants
The investigation was conducted in Liuyang No.l Senior HighSchool. Students in Senior 1 are newcomers, so they are not accustomed to the new teaching system in senior high school. Those in Senior 3 areall busy in preparing for the coming College Entrance Examination, sothey are not the ideal participants of this activity, either. The studentsinvolved are from 16 classes in Senior 2. Specifically speaking, there areabout 50 students per class, 522 boys and 328 girls, 850 students in total.All the students involved have learned English for more than four years,so they are familiar with English writing and the usual writing model.Besides, most of them are already 16 years old, so they are equipped withthe ability to analyze and judge something.
