1.1 Research Background

Reading is an important way for people to acquire knowledge and getinformation,and also the main way of language learning.Reading plays a crucial partin the second language acquisition.It is one of the five language skills that learnersmust master,and it’s also an important way for them to obtain information and inputlanguage.What’s more,reading is also the key examination item of the CollegeEntrance Examination English paper.In addition to the characteristics of long lengthand obvious differentiation,with the reform of the new College Entrance Examination,the score weight of reading becomes greater.As the saying goes,those who readbetter get the“world”.The importance of English reading teaching can be seenobviously.In daily teaching practice,teachers guide students to carry out readingpractice,mainly to stimulate their reading enthusiasm,deepen their knowledge ofwestern cultures,accumulate their language knowledge,cultivate their reading skills,and then enhance their reading ability.

However,under the influence of the baton of the College Entrance Examination,the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high schools isn’t optimistic,mainly with the following disadvantages:

Firstly,reading materials are mainly used as the carrier of language learningduring the reading teaching.Thus,teachers focus more on the vocabulary,fixedcollocation,analysis of grammar phenomenon and sentence structure,leading toignoring the cultivation of students’discourse consciousness,thinking ability trainingand reading skills and strategies.This causes that students can only read the literalmeaning of the article and are unable to master the structure of the context,to figureout the author’s writing intention,and to grasp the meaning of the article.

1.2 Research Purpose

In the process of language learning,reading is an essential link.As a way ofacquiring a lot of knowledge,it is the most basic,important,direct and effectivemeans of input.Reading can be divided into reading aloud,silent reading,intensivereading,quick reading,skimming,scanning and extensive reading,etc.A largenumber of studies have confirmed that reading,especially Free Voluntary Reading,has made significant contributions to the development of first and second languages(Elley&Mangubhai,1983:53-67;Krashen,1993&Nagy,Herman,&Anderson,1985:233-253);and Free Voluntary Reading,that is Sustained Silent Reading,is animportant way to develop second language acquisition(Krashen,1993).

Read your favorite books for 5 to 15 minutes a day without interference,and thisis called Sustained Silent Reading.This kind of reading mode is an English readingteaching method emerging at home and abroad in recent years.So far,lots of Englishteachers and researchers at home and abroad have carried out research on it.Theseresearch have shown that this reading model can improve reading fluency andstimulate reading motivation(Matsui&Noro,2010:233-253),and can cultivatestudents’reading interest and good reading habits(Siah,2008:180-184).With itsdistinctive characteristics,Sustained Silent Reading makes up for the defects ofconventional English reading teaching in meeting students’reading need论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
