5 Results and Discussion


5.1 The Influence of the Differences between Chinese and Western Thought Patterns on the Word
There are many various errors about words, and it is hard to summarize very type oferror in students’ compositions. Therefore, this study focuses on the common errors oftencommitted by students. There are three aspects: confusion of part of speech, wrongcollocation of words, and wrong choice of words. This kind of error is mainly caused by the traditional Chinese thought habit. In Chinese,the definition of part of speech of the word is relatively loose. When students memorize theword, they will easily ignore the part of speech of the word. They will only remember themeaning of the word. In most cases, the Chinese words and expressions will get their exactparts of speech when they are put into the sentences. In contrast, the English words andexpressions have strict rules before they are put into the sentences. Therefore, studentsinfluenced by Chinese mode of thinking do not well in the mastery of English part of speechof the words. When they write compositions, they only focus on the meaning of words andphrases and ignore the memorization of their part of speech, thus, this kind of error occurred.

Conclusion


It is needed to point out that this study exist some limitations. Firstly, in terms of theclassification of errors in students’ writings, taking the syntax and discourse as the example,the types of errors are in a large quantity, and they have various forms. In addition, there is nosystematic and strict definition of them, and sometimes it is hard to classify. Thus, the authormakes some preliminary attempts and explorations on this point. Secondly, the collection ofthe various data mainly depends on the intuition and experience of the teacher and the author,which may result in some mistakes.In a word, by the analysis of errors in students’ writing, it is can be seen that the errors inhigh school students’ compositions involving the various aspects including the lexical, syntax,discourse and so on. It is shown that the English writing teaching of senior high school isrelatively weak. This study only makes a superficial investigation in this field. And the authorthinks that the further study on this field can be conducted from the following two aspects: (1)in terms of the subjects, the subjects of this study only are the students in the same grade. Thecondition may be different as for the students in the different grades. Therefore, theresearchers can make a longitudinal study on this subject. (2) in terms of data collection, thestudents can be required to write in several literary forms, and then the results and data ofseveral writing tests will be analyzed through the comparison. This paper is only a tentativestudy due to the limitations. The author hopes that more relevant studies on this subject willbe explored in the future, which will provide the inspiration and enlightenment for Chinesestudents and English teachers.
