In view of the above situation,this research aims to combine theoretical nowledge with practical teaching according to Krashen’s(1985)input hypothesis,social cognition theory,and affective filter hypothesis,follow the law of mentaldevelopment level and age of senior high school students,consider the actual situationof extracurricular English reading,and construct an extracurricular English readingpattern of SSR in senior high school.It mainly wants to explore two points,the one isthe effects of sustained silent reading on senior high school students’English readinganxiety,another is the different effects of sustained silent reading on senior highschool students with high,medium and low levels of English reading anxiety.It isexplored to verify whether SSR can effectively alleviate the English reading anxietyof high school students,and which dimensions are mainly reflected in.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Studies on Sustained Silent Reading

2.1.1 Definition of sustained silent reading

The concept of sustained silent reading was first proposed in the 1960s byProfessor Hunt of the University of Vermont and was continued to be studied by tworeading experts,Marlin Mercury and Robert.Then this terminology is known by moreand more people.SSR refers to the reader’s sustained,silent reading over a period oftime,which is a free and voluntary reading activity that is not interrupted in themiddle.SSR advocates leaving everything behind,focusing on reading,dailyindependent reading time,sustained and undisturbed independent reading time,aswell as free voluntary reading(Trelease,2006).Krashen(2004:2)also definedsustained silent reading as a free reading activity between teachers and students for5-15 minutes every day,regardless of the location.

Based on the concept of SSR,different scholars propose several principles thatshould be followed in carrying out this reading model.McCracken(1971:521)believed that six principles should be followed.(1)It should be ensured that everystudent can read silently(Teachers can make rules for students who do not want toread silently.For instance,if a voice is heard during the sustained silent readingprocess,the reading time will be extended by 5 minutes).(2)Teachers also read withstudents to set an example for them.(3)Each student must read the same book everytime,and it must not be replaced during the same silent reading process to avoiddistraction.(4)In order to avoid distraction,a timer is used,which will ring when the time is up.(5)Any form of reading feedback is avoided,such as the discussion andcommunication.(6)The whole class or group participates in silent reading,which cancreate a good reading environment.Since then,some experiments have beenconducted in accordance with these six basic principles.After 3 decades,it is advisedthat students should follow principles to successfully engage in SSR.Anderson(2000:258)also identified six principles.(1)When you are reading,please do not getdistracted by other things.(2)Making any sound is not allowed.(3)Wanderingaround at will is banned.(4)Before reading,you should take care of all physicalneeds or problems,such as snacking,drinking water and going to the bathroom,etc.(5)Finding a place where is comfortable and cozy with enough reading materials isencouraged.(6)When you are reading,you are encouraged to not si论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
