xamine the applicability of this theoretical model on online networks. In more empirical terms, in this session we will review studies concerned with online communities, and with the transition from face-to-face socialities to online, ‘virtual’ togetherness. The changes and continuities between offline and online worlds will be critically discussed, as well as the changes in networking and sociality following the shift to the Web 2.0. This session is linked to an e-tivity, which revolves around the main questions and themes of the lecture.

Much of the controversy surrounding the use of social networking sites concerns the extent to which they, in fact, offer a new kind of social connection, the extent to which they lead to a new kind of community, and the extent to which this is a positive or negative development.
