This requires a good deal of effort on your part, both to find the materials you need using the library and the various online resources, to read and review them, and to extract and organise the ideas and concepts that you find. Please remember, your focus in selecting literature must be on academic articles from the academic disciplines of information systems. That means principally those found in journals, edited collections and research monographs.  Do not put much store in textbooks or magazine and newspaper articles, except perhaps as evidence of how ideas are used or presented. Academic literature often starts out with a literature review to set the scene, establish the state of the art, or identify some gap in current understanding. If you look at the papers in the study pack you will see that many (but not all), start with some literature review - see for example the start of Orlikowski (1996) or most of Jones (1999). In your later work (for example ADMIS stream essays and summer dissertations) you will need to do this as part of the work. On this occasion the literature review itself is the main focus of your effort. What should a literature review essay contain?
Your essay should act as a guide to the ‘academic thinking’ in your chosen field. ‘Academic thinking’ will include the theories used, the research approaches adopted, the concepts that are identified, the models that are presented, and the empirical sites used. You should expect that there will be some progression or debate over time in your topic, so you will probably be telling a bit of history too.

You will need to make judgement of the literature you are reviewing, is it essentially normative, explanatory or critical? Does it link together and create a sense of a cumulative research endeavour, or is it fragmented? What epistemologies and theories are used and how convincing are their arguments?

You will probably want to say something about how successful research in your area has been - what new knowledge has been produced, and what controversies (arguments and counter arguments) have been raised?

By the end of the essay a reader should be aware of the current state of knowledge and debate – what are the prevailing theoretical views, what lessons have been learned, how has this been reflected in professional practices, and what are the most interesting un-resolved questions? Because we want to be up-to-date it is important that the literature you use should be up-to-date. You almost certainly need to consider some literature from the 21st century. For example, an essay that uses all or mostly literature from the 1980s is unlikely to meet this criterion.
