摘要：Globalization has accelerated intercultural contact of all countries in the world.In order to achieve a more smooth communication between countries, foreignlanguage education nowadays not only attaches importance to the enhancement of thelearners’ linguistic knowledge and skills, but also stresses the cultivation of linguisticcompetence, especially the cultivation of cross-cultural communication competence.

r from those by females?RQ3: What factors may contribute to those differences?As to the first research question, the study will seek the answer by consideringthe frequency of apology strategies used by Japanese and Chinese, direct and indirectexpressions of making apologies, and the influence of relative power and socialdistance, severity of offence, etc. With respect to the second research question, thefocus will be put on the frequency of apology strategies used by males and femalesand making direct and indirect expressions of apologies. Apologies with intensifiersas well as some cases can concerning the use of apologies. Based on the previousstudy, the study will give the answer to the last research question by applying thepoliteness principle and face views, especially by taking a cross-cultural view wherethe politeness theory fails.

1.3 Organization of the thesis
The thesis consists of 6 chapters which are organized as follows:Chapter 1 presents a general introduction of the whole thesis including thepurpose of the research and the research questions.Chapter 2 is the literature review which is mainly composed of three aspects:introducing the previous studies concerning the speech act of apology, put forthvarious definitions and the content relating to apology strategies, and giving asummary of the previous theoretical studies including the Politeness Principle andFace View as well as the cross cultural perspective.Chapter 3 presents the research methodology which includes the instrumentemployed in the research and the data collection.Chapter 4 makes an analysis of apology strategies, investigating the differentapology strategies adopted by Chinese and Japanese females and males.Chapter 5 describes the research results, based on which discussions focus on thedifferences of apology strategies between Chinese and Japanese people.Chapter 6 is the concluding part of the thesis, in which the significance and thelimitations of the thesis are pointed out, and suggestions are given for the future study.
