6.1 Major findings
This study analyzes the apology strategies used by males and females in bothChinese and Japanese. It also made a comparison between them with regard togender, social distance, relative power and severity of offence in all attempt toidentify the similarities and differences. The findings are given as follows:Similarities:With regard to the speech act of apology, both Chinese and Japanese makeapologies quite frequently when their behaviors offend the victims. The highfrequency is partly attributed to the historical reason that between cultures attachimportance to the thought of "harmony" in society. Both Chinese and Japanesechosely use direct expressions and other strategies for apologies. Both of them tend todeny responsibility to exonerate themselves from the blame among males.Differences:Compared with the Japanese, Chinese people are less likely to make an apologywhen they commit an offence. With respect to expressions of apologies, Japanesepeople use more fixed expressions for making apologies whenever they do whileChinese people are more likely to express their feeling of remorse by using theunfixed expressions in addition to the fixed expressions for apologies. When Chinesepeople perform the speech act of apology, they are more likely to show their caretoward the victim, thus making their distance closer, while Japanese people areinclined to express their remorse by admitting their responsibility. This is mainlycaused by strong consideration of face in Chinese. In addition, the interpersonal relationship has a deeper influence on the speechact of apology in Japanese than in Chinese, probably due to the fact that Chinese payattention to family relations, but Japanese place more emphasis on the collectivism. There is an interesting phenomenon that Chinese females usually unconsciouslyuse both Chinese and English expressions for making apologies to express theirremorse due to the influence of English. As to the differences of apology strategies used by females and males, generallyspeaking, females employed more complicated forms of apology strategies than theirmale counterparts to express their regret and they are less likely to adopt the
strategyof denying of responsibility than their male counterparts. It is probably due to the richemotion of females who are willing to express their feelings.Based on the result of the investigation, we find that the politeness theory can notfully to explain the difference of the apology strategies used by Chinese and Japanesepeople. The difference should be analyzed from the cross-cultural perspective. Onlywhen the underlying factors of culture are taken into consideration can the results bemore rewarding. In this respect, this study stresses the significance of the culturalfactors in making an apology. Thus, the cultural awareness should be improved if thesecond language learners expect to have a good command of the language.
