1.1 Research Background
The Curriculum Standards emphasizes that the key pointof education reform is to end the traditional education method which over-stresses the transmission andexplanation of knowledge about grammar and vocabulary, and ignores the development of students’practical language; it stresses that the education reform aims that arouses students’ learning interest, and isrelevant to their life experience, that involves students in learning. Grammar and vocabulary areover-emphasized, while students’ ability to use language for real is neglected; let alone the development oftheir all-round ability. As a result, students’ potential strong intelligences are overlooked; they are not activeand enthusiastic enough in learning. This kind of teaching method brings down students’ interest andenthusiasm in learning knowledge. According to MI theory, all the eight kinds of intelligences have to befocused on during the process of teaching and learning. Besides, teachers have to recognize and respect thediversities of different learners in their learning preferences and potentials to facilitate teaching andlearning activities. In order to arouse students’ learning interest, to get all students’ multiple intelligencesinto full display, and to attain a better achievement in language teaching, teachers are required to designinstructional activities based on students’ diversified intellectual strengths and weaknesses.MI theory proposes that every person is born with all the eight intelligences and each intelligence canbe developed to a certain degree through sufficient practice. This testifies that students can becomeall-round from the biological perspective. Therefore, MI theory can supply a theoretical basis for theall-round development of students.In all, multiple intelligences theory conforms to the present situation of education reform in ourcountry; the application of the theory will help to realize students’ all-round development and the tendencyof quality education.
