e up content, to add some redundant material or to leave out something that will spoil the form. Actually, true language is fettered by the form thing and will become dim. Hushi exemplified with a poem by Dufu, a famous poet in Tang Dynasty of Chinese history, that is, “江山漠漠鸟飞去, 风雨时时龙一吟”. He thinks that the first half of the poem is great, but in order to keep the rhyme, the poet mechanically complete the poem with “风雨时时龙一吟” which seems a little bit redundant and weakens the whole aesthetic vision of the poem.
All the above aspects have demonstrated the same problem, namely, the disjoint of the written language and the oral language at that specific time. Hushi appreciates the beauty of the oral language and thinks the old written language has been rather out of date, for example, the rhyme. Because the oral part of language has evolved to a state that requires simplicity, clearness and vividness, the written language still lags behind which asks for the observation of rigid rules of language. There is a presumption by Hushi, that is, the conformation of written language and oral language. Hushi points out that the written form and oral form has once been one voice, but the development of written form of language is always far behind the development of oral form. Therefore, with the past of time, the disjoint of the written and oral language form emerges. The disjoint of these two forms is the definite result of the development of language. And in the criticism of old form of Chinese written language, Hushi exhibits that the fall of the old Chinese is due to it deviance form oral language. The only way to save old Chinese from fossilization is to resort to the oral. “The May Fourth Movement” works in pursuit of the reunion of these two forms. Hushi, in that sense, calls for a new type of Chinese language that enjoys an accordance of written and oral language. And since the oral leads, the written shall follow. But in reality, the written still rules. It is because of the class the language form has represented. So the overturn of that written language form is the overture of the old ruling class.
And Hushi believes that since the oral has been the basis of the written in the history (actually the written first comes from the oral), it can surely have important role in the reconstruction of a new type of written language. And the kind of vernacular Chinese based on the oral language will lead to the goal of the conformation of the written and oral language. Therefore, he sees “The May Fourth Movement” as a “renaissance”, a modern revival of oral language.
3.3 The reason of Hushi’s failure in his endeavor
Hushi has well discerned historical development of language that different times have different languages.
And he has seen the disjoint of the written and oral language and has well delved into the relation and development of these two forms. He thinks that the oral language can offer a remedy to Chinese language and Chinese society. He has only viewed the situation statistically. That is, he only believes that as long as the oral language is popularized in place of the dated written, all can be well settled. Actually, Saussure has studied the nature of the development of language. Saussure has promoted one concept, namely intrinsic linguistics, which is exempt from all influences such as culture and politics. But that kind of language does not exist of course. He puts forward that all written and oral languages are affe
