Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Xiao Hong,a talented female writer in the Republic of China,devotes herself todepicting the life of ordinary people in wartime with her own living experience.Her works,written in linguistic folklore,reveal a strong sense of Chinese folk culture of her times,which are of great significance in recording Xiao’s rebellion against patriarchal culture andtraditional cultural values at the same time.

Xiao’s literary capacity and achievements are remarkable in the history of Chineseliterature.In 1980s,studies on Xiao and her works began to appear.Since 2000,academicresearch on her works has gradually increased.And after the year of 2010,influenced by thecommemoration of the centenary birthday of Xiao,relevant studies increase rapidly withresearch on the translation of her works appearing.These uninterrupted studies in decadesafter her death indirectly reflect the research value and meanings of her works.And furtherstudies on her works and their translation are conducive to the vitality of them in turn,whichcan contribute to the dissemination of Chinese literature to some extent and also drawpeople’s attention to Chinese folklore.

Therefore,the thesis selects one of Xiao’s most famous works,Tales of Hulan River andits English translation as research subject.(More details of the research subject will befurther introduced in section 1.2.)

1.2 Tales of Hulan River and Its English Version

Written by Xiao in 1940,Tales of Hulan River is her last novel,which is regarded as akind of reflection of Xiao’s own childhood in Hulan town.Xiao recalls various charactersand life scenes in the whole seven chapters,to express her antipathy towards social reality ofChina at that time,where human nature and personality were not respected.The novel ischaracteristic of prose style narration,symbolism,multiple narrative perspectives and folklanguage.For example,the writing structure is organized in spatial structure with the shiftingnarrative perspectives to make a more complete presentation of her childhood in a moreinnovative way;symbolism and folk language contribute to reveal the theme of this novel.
