Thirdly, thosestylistic markers are analyzed with the primary purpose of identifying from the generalmass of linguistic features common to ordinary English usage as applied in any actualsituation. Lastly, the reasons why such features are applied by bloggers more frequently orextensively are explained.It is believed that the results of the analysis help enrich the research domain ofstylistics and make a contribution to the perfection of the stylistic theory. The significanceof this thesis can also be practical as it serves as a guide for those blog using beginners ofour Chinese who want to better understand the English blog entries to successfullycommunicate in the blogosphere or even create their own posts in English. It also shedssome light on the ESL (an abbreviation for English as a Second Language, which refers tothe teaching of English as a foreign language to people who are living in aEnglish-speaking country but whose first language is not English) teaching and learningbecause some well-written posts can be recommended to English learners to foster thesense of western writing style and idiomatic or fashionable English usages.

 

1.3 Research methodology
 Research approachWith the intention to accomplish the research objectives mentioned in last part, thisthesis adopts linguistic description within the framework of general stylistic theories. AsCrystal and Davy put it in their book Investigating English Style, "the ordered approachwhich seems most satisfactory in realizing the general aims of stylistics analysis involvestaking the object of study and discussing it in terms of a number of interrelated levels ofdescription"(Crystal and Davy, 1969: 15). During the discussion into each level, what weshould bear in mind is that the stylistic description of linguistic feature is identical with thatmade for any other non-stylistic purpose but the frequency and distribution of thosefeatures within certain context which is the focus of stylisticians' interest. By "feature"here, it means any piece of speech or writing which is considered to be deviation againstthe normal use of language and restricted in its occurrence to a limited number of contexts.Such features shall be called stylistically significant or stylistically distinctive features ormarkers.
