the perspective of RT,what cognitive interpretative process do the readers undergo in the comprehension ofverbal humor?Firstly, the production of verbal humor is a complex process. The thesis analyzesthis process in an attempt to make the readers have a better understanding about thegenerative mechanism of verbal humor. Whether the communication is successful ornot is due to both communicators’ access to the other side’s cognitive environment inwhich communicators are communicating (He Zhaoxiong, 2000: 181). Cognitivecontext is dynamic and changes with the ongoing of communication. It decides thefinal realization of humorous effect and thus plays a crucial role in the production ofverbal humor. The author concentrates on the cognitive context in order to highlightthe important role of context in the generation of verbal humor and gives the reader anunfolded and deeper understanding about humor production.Secondly, the thesis tries to analyze the cognitive interpretative process that thereaders undergo to obtain the humorous effect in the course of the comprehension ofverbal humor in details and supplies the readers with a clear picture of theinterpretative procedures of verbal humor.It is necessary and significant to conduct the study on English verbal humor withinRT. It has both theoretical and practical significance.Theoretically, this thesis applies RT to many verbal humor samples in order tointerpret the production and comprehension of verbal humor from the cognitive angle.The analysis and research results deepen the connotations of RT and further testify theapplicability and practicability of RT. And they enrich RT and make RT moresubstantial.Practically, this thesis makes the readers have a better understanding about RT andthe production and comprehension of English verbal humor. To some extent, thisstudy can help the readers to improve their abilities in humor appreciation.The results of this research give some implications to both the audiences andauthors of humor. On the one hand, the audiences should search for the optimalrelevance and find out the authors’ creative intention eventually with the premise thatthey manifest the cognitive contexts of the authors. On the other hand, the authorsshould ensure that the audiences could choose the appropriate contexts and infer theiractual communicative intentions. So the authors should take their audiences’ levelsinto consideration when they create the humors, such as the audiences’ cognitiveabilities, inferential abilities and etc. If the humor is too difficult or easy for theaudiences to understand, the authors might not get their expectable purposes thatmake the audiences achieve the humorous effect.

 

1.3 Organization of the Thesis
