Functional stylistics takes the function of language as central, i.e. what language does，and how it does，and starts from social context and considers language both acting upon，and being constrained by this social context.(Halliday,2000)In functional view, language and context are interdependent. At a broader level, our experience in the world clearly influence what we normally talk about and the way we talk about it. At the same time, the way we normally talk about these experiences influences the way we see them.(Thompson,2009:9) Halliday argues that language identifies three metafunctions of language, which are of the same importance. The first is the ideational function, using language to talk about people's experience of the world. The second is the interpersonal function, using language to interact with other people. The third is textual function, using language to organize people's messages. These three functions constitute the semantic system of language. According to Li Ya, functional stylistics does not only describe and analyze the linguistic structure and linguistic phenomenon, but also makes explanations and evaluations on the stylistic effects produced by them.(上海)And this thesis will explore the general realization of the interpersonal function in the State of  the Union Address.
　　　As for interpersonal function, it shows that language is used to enable us to participate in communicative acts with other people, to take on roles and to express and understand feelings, attitudes and judgment. In other words, as social beings, human can not live isolated; they need to interact with others in order to fulfill their needs. The interpersonal metafunction is the most important sociological use of language, through which it is possible for people to establish and maintain their status in a society and their own ideas on things. The interpersonal metafunction is mainly realized through the role of addressers and audience. Generally speaking, in daily communication, no matter in which way people exchange their role, the most fundamental types of speech role are just two: giving and demanding. Either the speaker is giving something to the listener or he is demanding something from him. Cutting across this basic distinction between giving and demanding is another distinction, that relates to the nature of the commodity being exchanged. This may be either goods&services or information.(Halliday,68).They make up four primary speech functions: offer, command, statement, and question. A figure below can clearly show these functions:
　　　To sum up, interpersonal function means that in a speech, we take on different roles by means of language use and show different attitudes, feelings or emotions to our audiences. For political speech, a speaker with strong personal emotions ,try his best to persuade the audience to agree his statement; in return, the listener will respond to the speaker, ask questions or follow him. According to Halliday and other functional linguistics, interpersonal function may be realized in the mood and modality system of language.
