1. Introduction

today’sworkplace requires a wide range of skills, including working in virtual or actual teams tocarry out complex tasks. It has been argued that Education has lagged behind in addressingthese changes, and that higher education in particular, no longer prepares young peoplefor the challenges they will face in the workplace (Collins & Halverson, 2009).One of the challenges facing learners in many countries around the world is thegrowing use of English as a lingua franca in academia and in the workplace. To addressthis, universities in Mexico are increasingly including English as a graduation requirement.Students must demonstrate mastery of the language through one of the manystandardized international exams. Thus, teaching and learning English are becoming evermore important in this context.Educators looking for alternatives to the traditional teacher-centered lecture-typeclass have several options. Among them is the learning community approach which hasstudents working together around a central project. This approach springs from theoriesof learner autonomy, collaborative learning, and shares many characteristics with task-based learning, project-based learning, and communities of practice. The objective of thelearning community is to generate new knowledge. This paper will first explain the theory behind the learning community model. Next,it will introduce the context and participants, 19 undergraduate students of Accountingin a Mexican university. It will explain the method for data collection and analysis, witha focus on the individual roles participants played within their teams and how theseroles color their perception of the task itself and of its outcomes. Finally, the conclusionswill show how this type of task can be incorporated into the standard curriculum foruniversity students.

2. Theoretical framework

More and more frequently, the workplace is not a physical place, but a space where peoplecome together and work in virtual teams, sometimes even in different countries andwithout ever meeting physically. Thus, the traditional teacher-centered classroom is nolonger appropriate as the only model for higher education. There are several alternatives, but the learning community approach replicates the kind of environment many studentswill find when they enter the work force and therefore deserves to be explored.

2.1 Learning communities学习团队

Educational models grounded in sociocultural theory view learning as co-construction.Thus, learning is perceived not as acquisition, but as membership within a community(Watkins, 2005). In this view, a learning community can be understood as a group…of autonomous and independent individuals who, starting from a series of shared ideasand ideals, decide to learn and work together, committing themselves to each other andinfluencing each other within a learning process. (Molina, 2005, p. 236) (Original in Spanish;my translation).A learning community consists of individuals who come together to accomplish a specificend or goal. It is this characteristic of shared goals which gives rise to a community论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
