摘要:F. Scott Fitzgerald recorded what he and his generation really thought about, what they pursued and what they lacked in his period. That is to say the novel is intertwined with Fitzgerald’s understanding of himself and his generation. The dilemma that Nick, Gatsby and Fitzgerald face is: whether to pursue one’s dreams and neglect the heart’s moral or to face the reality that such dreams are illusory.

ootleggers, and an underground culture of revelry sprang up. “Sprawling private parties managed to elude police’s notice and secret clubs that sold liquor became thrived.”25 The chaos and violence of World War I left America in a state of shock, and the generation that fought the war turned to wild and extravagant living to compensate. “Opulence and exuberance became the main order of the people’s lives.”26 The decayed values and the empty pursuit of pleasure and wealth resulted ultimately in the corruption of the American dream, as the unrestrained desire for money and pleasure surpassed more noble goals.
Like Nick, in the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald found this new lifestyle seductive and exciting, and like Gatsby, he had always idolized the very rich. Now he managed to be in the high-class. He, of course, was eager to indulge himself and enjoy the life. He fell into a wild, reckless lifestyle of parties. Similarly, Gatsby amasses a great deal of wealth at a relatively young age, and devotes himself to acquiring possessions and throwing parties that he believes will enable him to win Daisy’s love. However, in the fiction, Fitzgerald does not envy Gatsby’s rich wealth but point out that Gatsby’s aspiration is unworthy. And in the reality, Fitzgerald could not pull himself out of the confused society to gain a quiet life.
From his life and experience, Fitzgerald confronted the most confusing and conflicting things of that generation. He tried to find a balance between his life and his heart; however, he failed to do that. Because, he found that it was impossible to find or establish an acceptable moral society while the whole surrounding was in a total lost and decayed values.
All these show that Fitzgerald’s family, experiences and social environment had a great impact on shaping his controversial senses.

V. Conclusion

At its simplest the novel is about something familiar to most of the readers: a disillusioning, excruciatingly painful experience with love. But it is more than that. The author shows his conflicting feelings through the controversial senses of the two main characters: Nick and Gatsby. Nick once gets attracted by the colorful lifestyle in New York City but at last pulls himself out of the imbalanced life, for he realizes that the people there and their life all lack a moral center. And Gatsby pursues an illusionary dream without realizing that his dream has already ended. All of these show Fitzgerald’s complicated reactions in his heart. The influences from the author’s family, his life and the social environment are contributable to his controversial senses. On the one hand, Fitzgerald longs to become one part of the upper-class and to be rich; on the other hand, he is aware that this kind of life and pursuit actually suggest his spiritual emptiness.
Anyhow, F. The author of this book sends a message that the whole society would lose vitality when the culture or moral wall fell down. And in a ruining land, there would be no real dr论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
