Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background
Hollywood blockbusters have always been favorites of movie fans all over theworld. In recent years movie fans become more fastidious as the number of moviesincreases and the standard of movies rises. Therefore before watching a movie theyoften choose to watch movie trailers, read professional movie reviews on the internet todecide whether to watch a movie. To a large extent professional movie reviews play animportant role in influencing movie fans’ attitudes toward a movie. The arousedquestion is how professional movie reviews affect them. The answer to this question liesin “reader-centered” writing method which emphasizes on taking readers as the center,skillfully guiding the reader to understand a text. This writing method is moreconductive to realizing the communication between texts and readers, to promoting theinteraction between writers and readers, than traditional “text-centered” writing methodof which is on the structure and rhetorical skills of texts. For this reason, many scholarsin different disciplines nowadays have adopted “reader-centered” method in theirwriting to captivate a wide variety of readers. In this “reader-centered” methodmetadiscourse theory as a crucial approach aiming to study the interaction betweenwriters and readers is widely used in discourse analysis and language teaching. Manylinguists such as Crismore, Hyland believe that metadiscourse theory is not only able tohelp readers to realize writer’s attitudes to something or somebody but also allow readerto know writers’ personality and point of views; It also plays a key role in building thebridge between readers and writers. They have carried out a series of theoretical studyin metadiscourse and conduct a series of experimental research of metadiscourse invarious genres. This thesis sets out to study the distribution of interactionalmetadiscourse in professional movie reviews with corpus.Meanwhile as interactional metadiscourse has a close relationship with rhetoric instudying persuading power of discourse, this thesis tries to explore the rhetorical featureof interactional metadiscourse.

1.2 Innovation
The thesis has two innovations. The first point is that it fills the vacancy ofmetadiscourse study in professional movie reviews. Although previous scholars havemade a series of experimental studies, for example Hyland has studied the distributionof metadiscourse in 21 textbooks[1]3-26Crismore explores the use of metadiscourse inargument texts written by American college students and Finnish college students[2]39-71their studies only confine in small genre. Few scholars study the use of metadiscourse inprofessional movie reviews. The second point is that this thesis further refinesmetadiscourse theory. The research results show that Hyland’s metadiscourse theory hasits flaws which is it over-emphasizes the pragmatic function of metadiscourse butignores the lexical meaning of words. Hence this paper argues that the meaning ofmetadiscourse markers should be interpreted from the semantic level and the pragmaticlevel.
