摘要:Meanwhile as interactional metadiscourse has a close relationship with rhetoric instudying persuading power of discourse, this thesis tries to explore the rhetorical featureof interactional metadiscourse.
Chapter 4 Results and Discussions
4.1 Distribution of Interactional Metadiscourse in Professional Movie Reviews
The results show that totally 2335 interactional metadiscourse markers, accountingfor 4.4% of corpus (52888 words in total) are used, in which engagement markers makeup 27.3%; hedge markers are 25.8%; Boosters are 21.4%; attitude markers are 12.8%and self-mention markers are 12.7%.This distribution indicates two important features of movie reviews.First, movie reviews emphasize the involvement of readers and writers. Thisfeature is inferred from the large use of engagement markers because they function as atool through which writers project their stances and opinions into the discourse and theirgenerous use can enhance the involvement between readers and writers. Secondly, movie reviews show more respects to readers comparing with conveyingcommitment to text content because of the distribution of hedges and boosters. Hylandclaims that “the balance of hedges and boosters in a text thus indicates to what extentthe writer is willing to entertain alternatives and so play an important role”.

Conclusion
The major findings of this research can be explained from three points. First itdiscovers that in professional movie reviews the distribution of interactionalmetadiscourse is that engagement markers rank first, occupying 27.3%; hedge markerstake the second place, 25.8%; boosters are 21.4%; attitude markers are 12.8% andself-mention are 12.7%; of the five sub-categories of interactional metadiscoursemarkers self-mention marker is the least one in word numbers. This distributionindicates that writers of movie reviews employ a lot of engagement markers and hedgemarkers to promote interaction with readers.Next, through the discussions on the issues in 4.3 this author discovers that Hyland’smetadiscourse theory overemphasizes the lexical meaning of interactionalmetadiscourse markers and ignores their meaning in pragmatic level. So this authorbelieves the meaning of metadiscourse markers should be explained from pragmaticlevel and semantic level.In the end, this thesis finds that interactional metadiscourse markers are mostlygeneral, abstract and Latinate words according to Corbett’s kind of diction.In a word, the study of interactional metadiscourse in movie reviews hasdiscovered the distribution feature of interactional metadiscourse, further developedmetadiscourse theory.
