3.1 Register Deviation and the Creation of Characters
Register refers to “variant of a language or a level of usage, as determined bydegree of formality and choice of vocabulary, pronunciation, and syntax, according tothe communicative purpose, social context, and standing of the user” (OED).Different people have different speech habits and thus develop their own speechpattern. For example, intellectuals as always speak a language which is formal in styleand correct in diction, grammar and pronunciation. In contrast, illiterates are moreliable to speak a language which is colloquial in style and incorrect in diction,grammar and pronunciation. That is why it is said that register is the man. When it isin literature, many writers use register as an important means of revealing character.In the Renaissance and the Neoclassic Age, most writers strictly observed a principlewhich is called decorum. According to decorum, literary genres fall into threecategories: high station, middle station and low station. Characters are supposed tospeak in a way which is appropriate to their status. For instance, kings and queens aresupposed to speak in the most elevated style, while the humble characters likeservants are expected to speak in the colloquial style. As man is a bundle ofcontradictions, it is scarcely possible for a man to invariably remain in the sameregister when he speaks. Then the deviation of register he usually adopts exactlybrings out his deepest feelings for a split second.

We do not deem itproper to regard Shakespeare as one of the noblest minds or one of the purest hearts.Far from being concerned with “mono,” Shakespeare is noted for his consummateability to depict and present to the world the incredible diversity of human life and theincredible profundity and complexity of human nature. To a very large extent, wehave every reason to say that Shakespeare is one of the few people who haveexhausted all the pebbles on the beach of human life. In other words, Shakespeare hasexhausted all the possibilities of diversity, profundity and complexity of human world.He is the color that stands for all the colors of the spectrum of human life and he is thepicture that symbolizes all the pictures of human nature. Therefore, one of thecharacteristics in Shakespearean works is the display of diversity, profundity andcomplexity of human beings.
