Introduction

0.1 A Brief Introduction to Eugene O’Neill
Eugene O’Neill (1888-1953), one of the most outstanding playwrights inAmerica, is the pioneer and founder of modern American drama. His status inAmerican drama can be seen in Bigsby’s comment:The bridge between the pre-war and post-war world in the American theatre isprovided by a single man, albeit a man who, by 1945, had been silent for more than adecade. If any one writer can lay claim to having invented that theatre it was he...Hisname was Eugene O’Neill and throughout his career and subsequently he has created asense of unease in literary and dramatic circles...For thirty years his work constitutedAmerica’s claim to have created a powerful modern dramatic literature (Bigsby, 1992:15-31).O’Neill writes over seventy plays in his whole life, and those works have rich themesand various artistic techniques, including realism, expressionism, symbolism, romanticism, mysticism, etc. O’Neill is unique in American drama history for hisoriginal writing themes, broad relevant fields, profound philosophical morals and richartistic styles. Owing to his efforts, American dramas were in vigorous developmentin the 1920s comparable to novels, paintings, music and other popular artistic styles inAmerican cultural fields. Therefore, he is generally recognized as the most importantplaywright in America, and his status in modern American literature can be comparedto that of Shakespeare in the history of English literature. O’Neill wins the PulitzerPrize four times for his works: Beyond the Horizon, Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day’s Journey into Night. Besides, he was awarded the Nobel Prize forLiterature in 1936.

0.2 A Brief Introduction to Strange Interlude
Strange Interlude is O’Neill’s most fantastic creation in 1920s; it earns him thethird Pulitzer Prize after Beyond the Horizon and Anna Christie. From January 1928,this play was not only continuously performed for six months in Broadway, but alsoperformed in many cities in America, which was hugely successful. Manheimcommented on it like this: “By far the most ambitious of O’Neill’s treatments ofcontemporary American culture was Strange Interlude (1928), a nine-act play thataddresses all the concerns in the other plays in its mythicizing of the culturalcondition of the United States in the nineteen-twenties” (Manheim, 2000: 139).This play relates a strange life story of Nina, a beautiful and passionate woman, who lives in a puritan family under severe rules and prohibitions. Because of herfather’s selfish resistance, she does not sacrifice her body to her beloved fianceGordon before he goes to the war. The sudden death of Gordon shatters Nina’s dreamof love and happiness, making her regret extremely. To punish herself, Nina choosesan extreme way, that is, to leave home and be a nurse in a sanitarium for crippledsoldiers, giving her body to those soldiers as a way of “paying for her cowardlytreachery to Gordon” (O’Neill, 1988: 647). However, this kind of way can not makeher soul peaceful; after her father’s death, she follows the doctor Darrell’s advice tomarry Sam Evans, who loves her deeply and humbly, just for getting a healthy babyand filling the emptiness of her heart. Unfortunately, she is told by Sam’s mother thathis family has a long history of insanity. To save and protect her own son, Sam’smother persuades Nina to find a healthy man and born a healthy baby secret论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
