Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels are written in the first person and depict loneliness, sadness, self-deception and insecurity of the characters without inner worlds sensitively. If you want to summarize the characteristics of Kazuo Ishiguro’s work, an unreliable narration is the most appropriate. He is accustomed to using first-person narration, and the narrator’s narration is always deceitful to varying degrees. Furthermore, the majority of Ishiguro’s works are about memory, with the author creating texts through memory so that the story’s pieces are carefully linked together. By doing so, the reader can explore the deeper meaning. Therefore, unreliable narration is one of the reader’s ways into Kazuo Ishiguro. Thus, how are Kazuo Ishiguro’s unreliable narrative strategies used in An Artist of The Floating World? what are Ono’s unreliable narrations? Besides, how does the unreliable narration drive the narrative progression to achieve the communication between the implied author, the reader, and the narrator? More importantly, what kind of motivations lie behind the unreliable narration? In response to the above problems, this thesis has conducted research on them.

This thesis is composed of three parts.The first part introduces the contents and significance of this study and the previous studies on Ishiguro and this novel. The theory of unreliable narration is also introduced. The second part consists of four chapters that are the main bodies of this thesis. The second chapter analyzes Ono’s two identities, aiming to find out the relationship between the two identities and trying to figure out the forming of Ono’s unreliable narration. The third chapter illustrates Ono’s unreliable narrations on three axes. By digging deep into the unreliable factors on both the axis of knowledge and perception and the axis of ethics and evaluations that causes his unreliable reporting on the axis of events and facts layer-by-layer, the deep psychological mechanism for Ono’s unreliable narration is revealed. The fourth chapter investigates how unreliable narration drives narrative progression, trying to figure out the dynamic communication between the implied author, the narrator and the reader from the perspective of Phelan’s narrative progression. The fifth chapter further explores motivations for employing unreliable narrative strategies in An Artist of the Floating World. The motivations are analyzed from the two dimensions of Ono and Kazuo Ishiguro. Then, the last part is a conclusion of this thesis.

1.2 Literature Review on An Artist Of The Floating World

Kazuo Ishiguro’s research at home and abroad has yielded fruitful results. Foreign research on Kazuo Ishiguro begins earlier, with a wide range of discussions, rich perspectives, and fruitful results. The domestic research on Kazuo Ishiguro starts later, and before 2000 there were only some reports and introductions to the writer’s works. In the first decade of the 21st century, especially after the publication of Never Let Me Go in 2005, the domestic scholar witnesses the increase in journal articles with Kazuo Ishiguro as the subject year by year.
