Chapter One Identity Confusion in His Childhood
1.1 The Memory of Home as a Child
The novel Boyhood mentions two places, Voelfontein Farm and Worcester. Voelfontein Farm is the place where Coetzee’s grandparents had lived and left Coetzee with beautiful childhood memories. Worcester is the place where Coetzee lived as a child. It not only influenced Coetzee’s living environment, but also enlightened him on his own identity.
1.1.1 Voelfontein: The Memory of the Eternal Land
Coetzee’s ancestors came from the Netherlands and immigrated to the colony of the Cape, a “transfer station” established by the United East Indian Chartered Company to resupply its fleet of voyages between Holland and the East. Coetzee mentions it in his first collection of critical essays White Writing: On the Culture of Letters in South Africa (1988), which meanly records the depictions of the African landscape, foreign travelers’ and settlers’ records of Africa, farm novels, and the relationship between South African literature and European romantic literature. By reading his essays and related materials, researchers can have a general understanding of the history and development of Coetzee’s ancestors and his family.
1.2 Identity Conflict of the Marginal Child
There are many factors, such as family Education, school environment and society, affecting Coetzee’s development in childhood. The conflict of identity is a long-term struggle of the author which started in his childhood. No matter it is an endogenous or exogenous identity, he still cannot escape the fate of being marginalized. Even if he chooses to compromise and even betray his belief, he cannot change the acceptance of others. The uncertainty of identity and the sense of social marginality are vividly displayed in this 12-year-old boy in Boyhood.
1.2.1 The Marginalization of Family Education
Coetzee’s family education had a great influence on his childhood development. Although John was born in South Africa, his parents preferred the English culture in their family. At that time, South Africa was under the rule of the Malan Cabinet, which carried out extreme and harsh racist policies, and opposed the white British, as well as those Afrikaners who had a pro-British trend. Therefore, Coetzee’s family was on the fringes of the mainstream. Coetzee once wrote in his book White Writing (1988): To show Europeans that he cares about Africa, a white African writer must first demonstrate some degree of alienation from it. And once that alienation is reached, he can no longer claim that he essentially belongs to the place. (8) The conflicts between his internal family education and the external society made Coetzee always do an involuntary judgment about his own identity, and the confusion of his childhood identity was also the germ of Coetzee’s thought of seeking an identity in his youth.

2.1 The Search for the Homeland
