Doris Lessing (1919 - 2013), born in Iran in 1919, is among the most brilliant British female writers of the 20th century and an evergreen tree in the world of literature. She has published 27 novels, hundreds of short stories, two autobiographies, and numerous poems, essays, plays, and documentaries. Her works deal with themes such as racial discrimination, gender relations, war trauma, feminism, Marxism, and ecological crisis. She has been writing for more than 50 years and has won almost all the literary awards in Europe. After being nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature several times, she finally achieved the Grand Slam of her winning career in 2007 at the age of 88. The Swedish Academy awarded Lessing as “an epic writer of the female experience who examines a divided civilization with suspicion, passion, and imaginative power” (Yue 38).

The first period is mainly the creation of African themes. Most of Lessing‟s early works combine her life experience and reflect the social reality at that time. The representative works include her debut novel The Grass is Singing (1950), This was the Old Chief’s country (1951), Martha Quest (1952), A Proper Marriage (1954), The Ripple of the Storm (1958), and so on. These works are distributed in the early stage of Lessing‟s creation, and she mostly selects the creative materials from the early living environment and life experiences. The stories are mostly set in Africa and write about the conflicts and tragedies caused by the oppression of colonialism and racial discrimination. Among them, Lessing‟s most distinctive representative is The Grass is Singing. In this novel, Lessing combines the topics of feminism and colonialism and tells the tragic event of the killing of Mary, a white woman, by Moses, a black footman. This novel integrates the complex relationships between gender and race. From the unique perspective of the heroine Mary‟s life experience and life exploration, Lessing describes the living situation of women on the African continent under the oppression of race and gender, exposes the cruelty and ugliness of colonialism, and writes the plight and tragedy that colonialism has brought to most blacks and some whites.
