Question 1
a. Which interpersonal role, if any, was Adam Border exhibiting? Justify your answer.

Henry Mintzberg (2002), a professor and researcher of management, has identified ten management roles refers to specific categories of managerial behavior. He classified the ten roles into three groups, which are interpersonal roles, informational roles and decisional roles.

Interpersonal roles concerned with the managerial roles related to interpersonal relationships. Managers   need to fulfill their duties that involve people and sometimes the duties are symbolic and ceremonial in nature (Robbins et al., 2008). When a manager are presenting awards, signing legal documents or greeting visitors, they are acting as a figurehead role. When a manager responsible for training, motivating, staffing and associated duties, he is playing a role as a leader. Liaison role is the third role in the interpersonal grouping. This role required the managers communicate with people outside their unit as well as inside their unit.

According to the case in question one, firstly, Adam need to "maintaining high rapport and building a strong team". To achieve this goal, Adam must take the leader role, make sure that the employees all have essential knowledge to complete their work and train them with the effective skills to improve the team's work efficiency. Furthermore, this role also required him to motivate and encourage employees. For instance, Adam could unite the team members with the company culture or set a reward to the most outstanding performance. Thus, the team would be strong and keep a high productivity.

Moreover, Adam also need to deal with needs and materials outside his team, which indicates Adam is acting as the liaison role as well. For example, Adam should allocate the resources between the different department, coordinate the production of his team and make sure it will comply with the company's needs.

b. Which decisional role, if any, was Adam Border exhibiting? Justify your answer.

According to Mintzberg's theory, decisional roles are classified into four categories, which involves making choices. As entrepreneurs, manager commence and administer new projects which improve the company's performance. As disturbance handlers, managers need to make the correct decision in responsible to the unexpected problems. As resource allocators, managers are required to allocate physical, monetary and human sources. As negotiators, managers are responsible for gaining advantages for their teams during bargain and discuss. Besides, negotiate schedules, goals, projects and resources are also a part of negotiator role (Robbins et al., 2008
).

Refers to Adam's situation, one of his challenges has been to get clear about materials availability and the market demands, and then make the most effective decision to maximize the productivity whit limited resources. In addition, Adam is required to set priorities, which could be seen as "time resources" allocation. With these physical and non-physical decisions, organization goals could be achieved in a more effective way. As it is discussed above, Adam is acting as the resource allocator role. One the other hand, Adam is responsible for developing schedules which involves the negotiator role. Adam need to exercise this role by carefully communicating with related department and analyzing their supply and demand.
