1.1 Research Background of Syllables
The sound of languages as a product of human anatomy and physiology must have some similarities among cross-languages. Modern linguistics thinks the phoneme of each language has its own syllable structure, and syllable is the natural articulatory unit in languages, which is a kind of prosodic structure of hierarchy; on phonemics, to study syllable structure is to study the composing way of phonemes in languages. The analysis and comparison to syllable structure of different languages is exceedingly significant for modern linguistics to study human languages in order to reveal the nature of language and developing law. There are some similarities and differences among the syllable structures of various languages, just as the syllable structures between English and Mandarin.
Syllable is the basic structural unit of phonetic and the smallest phonetic segment perceived naturally, which is not the smallest phonetic unit, so can be re-analyzed. Although it seems the same for all spoken languages to differ syllables, different language has its own phonemic forms. It is extremely necessary and indispensable to master the pronunciation of a language in order to speak it correctly, however, theimportant point is to know how to differ syllables. Syllable is composed of phonemes having different tones in a certain ways. Some psychological experiments show that human are always memorizing utterances by virtue of syllable or subsyllabic, which is also the basic unit dividing word segmentation. In this case, syllable plays an influential role in solving phonetic perception, building speech production model and even finding word recognition.
In a word, syllable is an important basic unit in English, which is like a small phonemic building block, composing phrases and then sentences. These syllables have different pronunciation, longer or shorter, lighter or heavier, as add sense of rhythm and beauty of prosody into sentences, so that it is like music and people understand it easily. On phonetic analysis, syllable is the indispensable and basic concept of understanding phonological structure. Moreover, it provides a hierarchy of prosodic organization between segments and prosodic units(Kager，2001); taking syllable as an independent unit into consideration sounds quite necessary to describe languages on phonetics and phonology (Ladefoged} 1982). Hence, syllable has great effect on phonology as the relevant occurrence of phoneme and phonological features can be explained clearly only using syllables.
