Introduction
Political speeches are drawing enough attention all over the world,since they play a significant role in western political life.Many researchers at home and aboard have conducted comprehensive and systematical studies from the perspectives of rhetoric,linguistics,stylistics and critical discourse analysis and so on.
The political speech is an important type of public speeches.According to Lucas (1995),a political speech is one that the speaker,usually on behalf of a certain class, society,or party,makes to audiences on some important matters and relationships home and abroad.In other words,it is a speech given by a political figure with certain political purposes that will influence the target group of people.Political leaders deliver political speeches in order to persuade people to take action as the speaker wants,or to change the audiences’attitudes and beliefs as well as to strengthen or weaken their present attitudes or beliefs.
Power and aims are the most significant features of political speeches.In this kind of public speeches,the speakers usually try to present as an authority to enforce power upon the audiences.Besides,the speakers also have to align with the audiences to establish a kind relationship with them.The two-sidedness often forms a sharp contrast in political speeches.The political speech always has multiple aims.It not only includes the intentions of expressing certain ideas and communicating ideas,but also contains very complex intensions to influence the audience and special discourses.
Besides,political speeches share both features of formal written language and characteristics of the spoken language.They show features of systemic structures and formal language with written language.But different from written language,political speeches can have immediate feedback from the listeners.Political speeches are similar to spoken language in that they are delivered to the public orally and they all represent paralinguistic features.But the difference is that political speeches tend to use highly structured format and more formal language.The different ways of using political language will produce different political thoughts,and the persuasiveness and effectiveness of the political speeches will be got differently.Therefore,the study of language of political speeches plays an important role in the understanding of this kind of works.
When discussing political speeches,we may recall many famous speakers such as Barack Obama,George Walker Bush,Franklin Roosevelt,Martin Luther King and Winston Churchill.Their powerful speeches influence the people profoundly and even change the history.The speeches made by Hillary Rodham Clinton,the 67th Secretary of State of the United States,have drawn many people’s attention all over the world. Being one of the famous female political leaders in the world,Hillary Clinton once actively and ambitiously ran for the 2008 president of United States.Although she ended up her“dream of White House”for a variety of reasons,her brilliant speeches delivered in many states of America during a speaking tour as well as her concession speech left people a deep impression.She was honored even in defeat.
