摘要:The aim of this study is to find what the frequencies of discourse markers used bynon-English-major students are in comparison with native speakers. And whether there aresome differences in the use of discourse markers in the two sets of data.
Chapter Four Results and Findings
4.1 The top nine different discourse markers
The first step is to calculate the normalized frequencies of discourse markers which arefigured out through dividing the raw frequencies by the whole size of the respective data andthen multiplying 10000. So the formula is presented as follows: Frequency = (the totalnumber of discourse markers + the whole size of the corpus) X 10000. According to thediscourse markers classification by Wang Lifei & Zhu Weihua (2005) — 15 types and 74discourse markers in total, the writer put these discourse markers into Antconc to retrievethose discourse markers , applying the wordlist and the concordance mainly. Firstly, the ninemost used discourse markers in American National Corpus should be retrieved, they areuh/um, hut, you know, so, on when, yeah, because and well. Secondly, put these ninediscourse markers into Antconc to retrieve the frequencies of the nine discourse markers innon-English-major postgraduates' voice data. The above table shows the frequencies of thenine discourse markers. In this thesis, the Wordlist program and concordance in the Antconcwill be adopted to count the frequencies of the focal discourse markers. Then figure out theLog-likelihood and significance of the nine discourse markers between natives and innon-English-major postgraduates respectively by Log-likelihood Ratio Calculator. Thefollowing table? are the Log-likelihood and significance between natives andnon-English-major postgraduates.

Conclusion
Although the corpus-driven approach employed in this study is objective to investigatethe dynamic pragmatic use of discourse markers by Chinese non-English-major postgraduates.However, there are some limitations of the study the author have to admit, and theselimitations give some suggestions to the future research. Firstly, though the study issystematic and based on the specific context, it is still confined to a certain scope. And someindividual factors on the use of discourse markers, such as gender and English learningbackground, are not considered. Secondly, to get a more comprehensive picture of discoursemarkers used by learner groups, data from natural communication is desirable. It might bechallenged that in the present study the corpus of non-English-major postgraduates is toosmall. It is quite difficult to carry out more field recordings of spoken language and to processand analyze more data because of the pressure of research time and the limitation of variousconditions.
