4.1 Results and Discussion of the Motivation Types
Table 4.1 shows the mean and standard deviation of each motivation type of the non-Englishmajor freshmen in the subject college. The mean score of the overall motivation types is 3.44,with a standard deviation of 0.5. Item 1 to 19 of this questionnaire refer to the types ofmotivation, and it's divided into six types of the freshmen' motivation in the subject college, asshown in Table 4.1. From the table we can see that the mean score of individual development isthe highest. Next to individual development is the motivation of immediate achievement. Thenext three ranks are community responsibility, informational medium and intrinsic interest, andthe motivation of going abroad is the lowest.

Conclusion


According to the complicated construction, motivation has received a lot of attention both inthe field of psychology and education, but little consensus has been reached on the definitions ofmotivation and factors that may have influence on it. Many researchers and educators havealready acknowledged the importance of motivation in recent years, and they find thatmotivation plays a key role in foreign language learning. Meanwhile, motivation is a contextwhich may be influenced by a lot of factors. This study was conducted to explore the freshman'smotivation types, motivation level and the factors influencing the motivation in English learningin independent college.The study aims to find the answers for the three following questions: a) What kinds ofmotivation do the freshmen hold in the subject college, and which one is the main EL motivation?b) How is the freshmen' motivation level in EL in the subject college, low or not ? c) What arethe factors affecting EL motivation level, and which is the main one? From the analysis anddiscussion of the data from the questionnaire, we discover three findings.
