This paper adopts English news reports for analysis and research, eight of them from China Daily and Science Daily and the rest from Newsweek. The study on reporting verbs in English news reports from a certain perspective can highlight the interpersonal meaning. The study takes the form of classification, rather than not analyze the ten adopted news reports one by one. The study involves reporting verbs in science text and political text. In the process of text generation, the authors are constrained by the purpose of communication, so reporting plays an important role in revealing the writer’s attitude and establishing his identity; as a result, it indicates the interactions between the writer, the reported person, the text proper and even the potential reader and; at the same time it indicates how readers can impact on the author's way of text generating in a potentially communicative way. Therefore, this kind of analysis can better reflects the reporter’s value judgement and attitude and make the text become a social dynamic process. The reporter reports through understanding the cognitive inputs of hearers and speakers, reflecting the reporters’ evaluations of the reported contents.
We first set forth the topic of interpersonal meaning in two types of text, and then take four pieces of news to illustrate how the reporter themselves show the interpersonal meaning. In this way, different types of text can be compared, which can further highlight our purpose: Reporting verbs in different types of text embody different meanings.
IV. Study Results
We choose two political news reports for study, finding that in political text the reporting verbs like "say", "show", "claim", "introduce" account for a considerable proportion of the frequent use. In addition to these, reporting verbs also included "point out," "believe" and so on. The lower frequency of the words involve words such as "request", "brief" and "advocate" and so on. "Say" is the most frequent of the verbs, and it can be used flexibly. In terms of direct quotations (such as: • Samuel Schmid said: "⋯ ⋯") the frequency of “say” is higher than that of other words. In indirect quotations (such as : report said ⋯ ⋯) the frequency use of ”say” is also very frequent. The use of reporting verbs like, "introduce" and “claim” can effctively avoid duplication and monotonony. In political news reports, the frequent use of the reporting verbs like "say", "claim" and "introduce" is not surprising. These words belong to the neutrally-colored words. Words such as “advise”, “suggest”, and “recommend” belong to the proposal types of reporting verbs. The reporters seek to use such words in order to present the reports as objective as possible, and enhance the credibility of the news, so that readers can believe the reports. It should be said that in political reports the frequency of neutrally-colored reporting verbs is high, which is fully consistent with the requirements of news authenticity and objectivity. "say", "claim" and "introduce" are reporting verbs with a higher frequency in political news. The principle of objectivity followed by reporters in many aspects can be reflected directly or indirectly when reporting news. The neutrally-colored reporting verbs are the embodiments. Reporting verbs are also an infiltration of the attitudes and perspectives of reported persons or reporters. And fr
