The role of vocabulary in foreign language communication can never beoveremphasized, just as Wilkins claims that “without grammar very little can beconveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed" (1972:111). To express one's own thoughts clearly, one must havesufficient vocabulary. A mountain of words form a great of sentences and lots ofsentences constitute an integrated writing. Therefore, we can see what importance isvocabulary! So many a scholars focus on the study of vocabulary and the study of therelationship between lexicon and writing.
Many researchers found that the size of the vocabulary is closely related to foreignlanguage writing, and a large number of difficulties English learners come across inwriting are caused by the lack of vocabulary (Astika, 1993; Raimes，1985; ChengJingying, 1994; Wu Yongzhi，2000; Zhang Guorong，2002). Just as Raimes (1985)pointed out: students with low writing level want to express their own ideas out asurgently as students with high writing level. But they fail to express themselves clearlymainly because of lack of vocabulary. Just like a good many Chinese English learners,especially college students facing all kinds of English examinations，like CET 4 andCET 6, they want to express themselves, want to get a high mark, unfortunately, onaccount of the inadequacy of vocabulary, they finally fail the exam.At the same time, there are also some scholars have pointed out that even studentswith higher levels of English, when they write in English they also need to have a largevocabulary in order to write a good essay (Spack, 1984). In the aspect of the exertion ofvocabulary, especially the aspect of lexical richness and its relationship withcomposition quality, the findings of predecessors show that there is very highcorrelation between the diversity of word choice and writing scores (Engber, 1995).
