ersuade that human experience andmind play an important role in the semantic formation of English phrasal verbs.In China, English phrasal verb has always been a hot topic no matter to Englishteaching or to English learning. There are many researches which emphasize itsmorphology and function in semantics and syntax, such as Xuan Guoyou (1980), LuGuoqiang (1985), Chen Zhi'an (1994) and Wang Rongpei (1997). In their studies, thehistory, basic structure, phonetic and semantic feature of phrasal verbs and some strategiesof teaching phrasal verbs are presented in a full picture. Enlightened by their studies,people gradually recognize the feature of semantic unity and structural stability of phrasalverbs. All these studies provide us with a chance and a great resource to explore thesemantic potentials of English phrasal verbs within the framework of Systemic FunctionalLinguistics.


1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
Combining the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, based on the previousstudy on English phrasal verbs, this paper endeavors to explore the semantic potentials ofEnglish phrasal verbs, which is of both theoretical and practical significance.It has been generally accepted that language, as a social semiotic system, plays thecentral role not only in storing and exchanging experience but also in construing it.Halliday and Matthiessen (2008) put forward a semantic interpretation of the threecomponents of the "environment" of a grammar: a knowledge base, a text planner and acomponent specifying the writer-audience relationship. These three componentscorrespond to the three metafunctions of systemic theory, i.e., ideational function, textualfunction and interpersonal function.In their studies, Halliday and Matthiessen (2008) regard experience as a resource thatis a potential for understanding, representing and acting in reality. They interpretexperience as meaning that is construed in language and propose ideation base as aresource of construing experience. The phenomena of experience are construed andrepresented by the three semantic categories of ideation base: sequence, figure andelement. As a development of Systemic Functional Linguistics on discourse semantics,Martin and Rose (2003) propose the Ideation perspective, which is concerned with howour experience of "reality", material and symbolic, is construed in discourse.


Chapter TwoLiterature Review


Numerous studies have been conducted on English phrasal verbs and their polysemyboth at home and abroad. Some of them focus on the structural interpretations andconcentrate on the syntactic behavior. Others pay more attention to the semanticperspective. This chapter will review different researches on English phrasal verbs inChina and abroad.


2,1 Studies on English Phrasal Verbs Abroad


2.1.1 Syntactic Approaches
Based on Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary (2004: B15),English phrasal verb (sometimes called multi-word verb) refers to a verb that consists oftwo, or sometimes three, words. The first word is a verb and it is followed by an adverb(e.g. turn down), or a preposition (e.g. eat into), or both (e.g. put up with). These adverbsor prepositions are sometimes called particles.
