摘要:The investigation into the second language acquisition of English stress wasconducted to provide more insight into the issues and problems that English learners,to be more specific, Chinese learners of English, who come from a divergent nativelanguage in terms of typology are confronted with.

itdelivers, stress will reflect on syllables in various places of a specific word. Englishbelongs to this class. By this I do not mean that there are irregular patterns to placestress in given languages, but rather than the phonological shape of the word that doesnot play a sole role in deciding the position of the stressed syllable, no word pairscontrasting in terms of stress is likely to be found.By stark contrast to languages with word-level stress, another class of languageswhere stress does not have a contrastive function with regard to the level of wordexists. Rather, it is found, more often than not, that pitch is a contrastive factor. Tonelanguage belongs to one of this subcategory, where syllables within a word carrylexical tone, such as Mandarin Chinese (Gussenhoven, 2004).

Chapter 5 Discussion

5.1 Production Results
For Senior High-school students, non-words produced in a noun frame werefound to have more initial syllable stress than those produced in a verb form. For bothnoun frame and verb frame production, more initial stress were found for CVV CVCCnon words (Type One) than CV CVCC (Type Two) non words. In addition, the verbframe productions showed more final syllable stress for CVCVVC non-words (TypeFour) than CVCVC (Type Three) non-words. However, according to Guion et al.(2006), contrary to the native English speakers who use coda clusters to determinestress placement, to be more accurate, a syllable with coda clusters is likely to bestressed, the results from the senior high-school students did not show muchsimilarity in this regard. All results mentioned above indicate that senior high-schoolstudents who have been in America for study for at least two and a half year uselexical class and vowel length in assigning stress to non-words.For College Students, they showed several differences from senior high-schoolstudents. At first, the interaction of lexical class and syllabic structure was not foundto be significant. In the second place, the final long vowel effect that a syllable with along vowel in the final place is likely to be stressed was not observed in this group.Nevertheless, non-frame productions of college students had more initial syllablestress than verb frame production, which is similar to those of senior high-schoolstudents.
