In the opening chapter of The Second Sex,Beauvoir develops a detaileddiscussion of the facts from a biological perspective.She argues that economics is notthe source of women’s oppression and abuse,but rather,at the physical level,it iswomen’s natural biological characteristics that invite such pressure.

Beauvoir believes that biological factors are crucial to women’s lives and arefundamental to the construction of their situation.She begins her interpretation ofwomen’s fate of the other with the biological dimension.Indeed,women’s physicalcharacteristics tend to place them as the other-a secondary situation.In particular,women’s subordinate status is reflected in their reproductive characteristics.She notesthat over 85 percent of women experience varying degrees of distressingphysiological reactions during menstruation.Blood pressure begins to spike beforemenstruation and drops after it ends,the pulse rate increases.Body temperature oftenrises,resulting in frequent fevers and abdominal pains.As Beauvoir pointed out,pregnancy is a normal physiological process.If the mother maintains balancednutrition and regular health,it will not be adversely affected.Some interactionbetween the fetus and the mother will even benefit the mother herself.Although thispositive view may lead to a positive perception of pregnancy in society,pregnancy isstill an arduous and lengthy process.Not only does pregnancy not benefit the womanon a biological level,but it can also cause her tremendous harm.These physical factscannot be changed,as it seems to the general public that women do not have strongabdomens because of the new life that absorbs their vitality.The cause of disease inwomen is often not an external influence but a dysfunction caused by internal factors.It is thus clear that the restriction and enslavement of women by the species is relatedto the reproduction and continuation of human beings,and it is difficult for women toescape from this state of control and oppression.

1.2 Cognitive plight

In traditional societies,women not only suffer from physical but also suffer fromcognitive dilemmas.The cognitive plight is also the dilemma of human existence.Thestudy of women’s problems should first focus on women’s consciousness andcognition;only those who have thoughts are the ones who exist.However,women inpatriarchal society lose their self-awareness.They grow up in a patriarchal society andgradually acknowledged their injustice position.They can only suffer in silence,hidetheir perceptions,and shape themselves according to the traditional image of womenand the discipline of women.Because,in their perception,women are supposed tobear it and cater to femininty.They consciously construct their selves according to thewill of men and the will of society.And they play the role of the women that society,family,and men appreciate.When women construct their subjects,they are always ina passive position or even forced to accept men’s world.
