Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 An Introduction to Margaret Atwood

In September 2019,Margaret Atwood published The Testaments, the sequel to TheHandmaid’s Tale(1985).The novel was nominated for the Booker Prize and the Giller Prizefor Literature, and later won the Booker Prize with Bernardine Evaristo. The Testaments ofthe three protagonists of The Testaments are the main thread of the tyranny of the Gilead State, making it an excellent science fiction cautionary tale.So far,Margaret Atwood has publishedseven books of poetry,17 full-length novels, eight collections of short stories, ten works ofessays and literary criticism, eight works of children’s literature, and one comic book.Margaret Atwood has won major literary prizes in Canada, the United States,England,France,Italy and other countries, and has received widespread attention from Western academics. One of Atwood’s bestselling novels,The Handmaid’s Tale won the 1985 Governor General’sAward in Canada and the 1987 Arthur C.Clarke Award, and in 2017,following the broadcastof the American series of the same name,The Handmaid’s Tale was reprinted and became aglobal bestseller of the year. This wave also generated strong interest from audiences andreaders for the sequel,The Testaments(2019),for which Atwood also won the Booker Prizein October 2019,after winning the Booker Prize in 2000 for the full-length novel The BlindAssassin.

Atwood has a deep literary heritage,a keen observation of life,a poet’s temperament, aflirtatious intelligence and a reflective rationality. Her poetry is sentimental, her fiction is aportrait of contemporary Canadian life, reflecting the violence, repression, doubt and fear thatindustrial civilization has brought to mankind, and her criticism is sharp and forceful in itscritique of literary and social malpractice. In addition,Atwood was very concerned about thestrong and omnipresent influence of American culture on Canadian culture and the increasingAmericanization of Canada.1She strongly supported the Anansi Press, whose purpose was topromote an independent Canadian national culture, and spare no effort and contribute greatlyto its establishment and development;she also helped find the Canadian Writers’Association,of which she was president;she was invited to England, the United States,Germany,Russia,Ireland,Australia and other countries to give lectures and readings.

In The Testaments,Atwood sets the story 15 years after the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, when corruption and decay have begun to emanate from within the Gilead Kingdom.Thenovel further explores the world of Gilead through the eyes of three women, including SisterLydia, who is well known to readers, and Agnes, the second generation under the Gileadregime, and Daisy, who lives in Canada.

The Testaments continues the setting of The Handmaid’s Tale:the rise of thefundamentalist movement in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s,the resurgence of theharsh theocracy in New England’s Puritan society during a time of social upheaval, theprejudice and discrimination suffered by women, the high walls and iron curtain, segregation.Booker Prize jury chairman Peter Florence pointed 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
