Chapter One Religious Slave vs.Free Master
1.The“Meaning”of Death to Religion
Religion is a major theme in Dubliners, and is always accompanied by images ofdeath. It seemed that when religious faith is threatened with disintegration by externalforces, only death can stop the disintegration of faith. In other words,it is widelybelieved that accepting death is a form of martyrdom. So,Joyce seemed to indicatethe bondage of the Catholicism seen from the overt progression. But,death alsomeans an end and a rebirth.Deeply influenced by the modernist trend of thoughts, perhaps Joyce didn’t simply want to reveal the religious constraints on the minds ofDubliners, and he also used the image of death to suggest a spiritual transformation, which can be inferred from the covert progression.
In The Sisters, the first sentence“There was no hope for him this time:it was thethird stroke”(Joyce,2012:1)indicated Father Flynn’s coming death, and“It was thatchalice he broke...That was the beginning of it.”(Joyce,2012:9)explained the reasonof his death. From the overt progression,Father Flynn is guilty at his breaking thechalice which influences his spirit, and finally results in his death.Almost everyoneagrees that his death is a relief,as“my aunt”said,“Ah,well,he’s gone to a betterworld”(Joyce,2012:6).Fundamentally,it’s the result from religious persecution toDubliners’spirit, and its degree is so deep that people’s spirit can be saved fromphysical death. Here,Joyce seemed to criticize the bondage of the Catholicism, and itis concluded that Joyce’s had a negative attitude towards Dubliners throughportraying Father Flynn’s ignorant and pedantic image.
2.The Religious“Effects”on Dubliners
“Paralysis”is the tune of the whole work.At the beginning of Dubliners,Joyceused this sentence,“Every night as I gazed up at the window I said softly to myselfthe word paralysis.…It filled me with fear, and yet I longed to be nearer to it and tolook upon its deadly work.”(Joyce,2012:1),to show the boy sees a terrible paralysisin the dying priest.Seemingly,Joyce believed Father Flynn’s perseverance in religiondoes not only make himself get paralyzed but also leaves behind the religiousremnants after his death. For instance,Joyce designed that the boy is Father Flynn’sold friend,He had studied in the Irish college in Rome and he had taught me topronounce Latin properly. He had told me stories about the catacombs andabout Napoleon Bonaparte, and he had explained to me the meaning of thedifferent ceremonies of the Mass and of the different vestments worn by thepriest.Sometimes he had amused himself by putting difficult questions to me,asking me what one should do in certain circumstances or whether such andsuch sins were moral or venial or only imperfections.(Joyce,2012:9)
It could be inferred that the boy is raised in a religious culture. In addition,Joyce, through the long chatter of the sisters, made abundantly clear the endless religiousremnants behind the priest’s death.
