Abstract :As a writer in the 20th century, Virginia Woolf played an important role in stream-of-consciousness novel writing. Her novel The Mark on the Wall written in 1919 is a successful novel of stream-of -consciousness. The novel describes the character’s six guessing after seeing the mark on the all. At last, she finds out the mark is a snail. After the first appearance, the mark is replaced by the author’s consciousness flowing. In this way, consciousness flowing becomes the main body of the novel. This novel presents the uncertain, unspeakable, irrational and free flowing of consciousness vividly to the readers. After reading The Mark on the Wall, readers can find that the novel of stream-of-consciousness has broken the traditional pattern of novel writing in its devices, structure and language. This novel is a typical psychological one. In this novel, the carrier of the author’s thoughts is images, and interior monologue is applied as the record of the author’s inner reality. What’s more, unique structure and artistic charm of language presents the mystical and unique style of stream-of-consciousness novel.
The thesis will analyze the features of the stream-of-consciousness technique in The Mark on the Wall from its unique devices, structure and language, and try to help the readers have better understanding on novels of stream-of-consciousness.
