Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch tells the story of Theodore Decker as he stumblesthrough a childhood trauma,interspersed with the influence of Fabritius’s the Goldfinch.Tartt focuses on the traumatic story about American teenagers growing up in the aftermathof the September 11 attacks.Many scholars at home and abroad have studied the theme,writing skills and characters.Theme analyses are mainly about trauma,growth and thevalue of artworks.Analyses of Tartt’s writing skills and techniques mainly focus on theauthor’s rhetorical devices,narrative misdirection and other angles.As for characteranalysis,especially the analysis of the protagonist,many scholars analyzed the psychologyand behavior of the protagonist Theo from the perspectives of identity and existentialism.The Goldfinch is narrated from Theo’s first-person perspective,therefore,it is particularlyunable to capture all of what happened at the same time,and Tartt has a perfect handle onthe rhythm of The Goldfinch’s narrative and the rationality of the arrangements ofcharacters’behaviors and language.The novel also has a clear and reasonable clue of theprotagonist’s growing up.When it comes to Genette’s narrative time theory,it has been widely used in the narrative researches of literary works including novels and dramas athome and abroad,and is often combined with other scholars’narrative time theories toanalyze literary works.These works are characteristic of narrative time and rhythm.However,no one has analyzed and studied The Goldfinch from the perspective ofGenette’s narrative time.

1.2 Research questions and content

This thesis chooses Genette’s Narrative time theory as the theoretical foundation,andattempts to make clear The Goldfinch’s structure and further dig out its theme of growth.Three research questions are put forward:What kinds of narratives can be sorted out underthe theory of narrative time?What are the effects of four narrative movements?What isthe theme reflected in the narratives?

Through close reading,the thesis first locates the four types of movements from theperspective of time duration,that is,Ellipsis,Pause,Summary,and Scene as employed inthe novel,and sorts out four corresponding narratives that is accident narrative,traumanarrative,parallel narrative and illumination narrative.By analyzing these four narratives,the effects of the four narrative movements are explicated,and the four narratives’function in the construction of both the form and the theme of the novel are revealed.
